Title: hickory D bow build along
Post by: CalebNH00 on March 29, 2013, 04:28:00 PM
A little while ago I posted a question about tillering a hickory flat bow. However, that bow broke while I was attempting to recurve the tips   :( .Anyway, after the failure of my mahogany bow(   mahogany for a bow wood (http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=009869) ) I took another look at the bow.I decide to try to salvage a bow out of it. It appears that I will get a 48" bow.the mid-limb width will be 1" wide, 1/2 tips.
the break

the layout(yes I will cut off the thick handle)

I will probably rough it out tomorrow, any comments are welcome!

Is that a board or a stave? And is the whole limb width going to be 1", then taper from midlimb to 1/2" tips?

TC: It was a bow blank given to me by a friend like the one from 3Rs, and it will be one 1" till about 7" from the end. Then it will taper to a 1/2".

I've decided to back this one with some thin leather, just a little insurance.

I wouldn't use leather...it's too heavy (slows the bow) and stretches too much (won't hold down splinters).  Silk from an old tie/dress or even brown paper will work much better.  You can get the paper in long rolls at any department store in the mailing supplies.

this leather is really light and strong, not sure if it's a piece of fake leather or not, it's just some sturdy material. I'll start cutting the bow down soon, I will post some pic as soon as it is done.

48" is awful short. Hickory is tough stuff but that handle will need to bend for sure. What draw length are looking to get it to?

Well, decided not to back it. I've got it all cut down to size.
VB: here is a pic of the wood,I'm pretty that it's hickory.

RTH: Yes it is going to bend in the handle. I want to get a 28" draw out of if I can, if not then I'll try for a 24".

I'm thinking you better try for 24" max, or less.

Don't think that this is going to work. the bow is VERY stiff, and all my tools just slide on the top or washboard on it. This is ok, because I am making another one.
