Well, I'm all done building my swap bows for the year and I only have two other bows on the books to make so I plan on building a kids how for the St.Judes auction this summer. I think it would be awesome if we all jumped in and made just a pile of kids bows for the auction. Sure it don't have to be a kids bow, but it is all about the kids so why not right. My challenge is to everyone out there in the swap or not. Let's see how many kids bows we can fill the auction up with and really show this site what the bench can do for what is in my opinion one of the greatest charities out there. I was born with a condition called tetrology of fallot and had my first open heart surgery at the age of three. I can't imagine what my parents went through both financially and mentally, but they made it and so did I thanks to some awesome doctors at children hospital in st. Louis. Ever since then I have had a soft spot in my heart, no pun intended, for sick kids. We are all so lucky to not have to know the kind of issues that these families go through.
Anyway, I'm in. I hope you all are in to. It won't cost much just some time and the reward will be ten fold I think. So, who is in? Don't make me call yall out cuz I will. :campfire:
Alright, so I'm calling out Roy right now.
When is the St. Jude's auction, and what would constitute a kid's bow? Weight, length, etc?
I'm in!!
I know all too well about sick kids. In December 2006, my wife gave birth to extremely premature twin boys. Jonathan weighed 1 lb 14 oz and Michael weighed 1 lb 6 oz. They spent months in the hospital and Jonathan eventually came home, but we had to let little Michael go. His lungs were just too under developed. Jonathan had a rough road to start, but is a healthy little boy today.

I'm in. What weight, length we looking at?
I'm glad you jumped in john. You were on my list. Lol. That's an awesome pic by the way. Priceless.
Kids bows seem to be all over the place. I make mine around 48 and up and the weight is usually somewhere around 15@15 20@20 18@18. It really doesn't matter as long as it shoots. My three year old daughters bow is maybe five lbs. She can pull it with ease, plus I have dry fired it and overdrawn it over and over to insure safety for any potential overzealous big brothers. My oldest son has one of Mike's maddag bows. I will get some measurements from it for you glass guys.
when is the auction? i might be able to get a selfbow or 2 done up for the kids.
Count me in David. Can you post deadline and info on bow shipment details?
Thanks
Cory
I'm in. Let me know what you need.
I got the perfect lil osage stave at 56 inches...still never made a selfbow that small but heck ya I'll do my best. I will be definitely in if it turns out nicely! Great idea DVS!
David, That's an awesome idea!! So, so many talented bowyers here on TG....I've often wondered why we only get a few bows donated each year. Every one that gets donated brings a good amount of money for the kids...lets hope this lights a fire....com'on fellas!!
All and any kids bows will be great, but heck, big boy adult bows will bring a lot of interest as well and remember it's all for the kids....so donate, donate, donate!!!!
David :notworthy:
If I've got time I'm in. Just depends on the deadline.
The auction itself is in June and last year items started listing before hand. Basically there is no sign up. All you do is make a bow, take some pics of it and list it. After the auction you pay to ship it to the winner. Some have issues with shipping cost and just donate and have the buyer pay shipping. It's pretty cheap as most know to ship bows. I have one done already and will make another. Kids bows seem pretty easy to crank out. Maybe you can't make a bow but make quivers or arrows, kids need arrows too. I'll see if I can dig up the actual dates onight if I can.
I bet one shows up in my rack that I'll part with about that time Dave ;)
I'm in
I'm in Dave. Was thinking about doing that anyway.
Ron
I knew you would be Ron.
I like this idea a lot. Hopefully I can get a hickory self bow finished for this.
"My oldest son has one of Mike's maddag bows. I will get some measurements from it for you glass guys."
Great idea!
Remember, you won't have to hit a specific weight, thousands of potential buyers lookin!
Makes it easy, huh??
Prob dont need any 70# @ 14" tho!
Kenny forgot to add that he is in as well. Thanks Kenny!
That's why it is called the st. Judes challenge.
Today I took my 52 inch long osage stave and roughed out a bow. I figured I would over build it a little right bow and then thin it out if need be later on in the tillering process. It is 1 1/4 wide at the fades all the way to about the 3/4 ish area of the limbs then straight taper to 1/2 inch tips. Here is what it looks like so far....

You can see I have quite a bit of straightening to do so I will take my time there to get it pipe straight. Comments are welcomed! It was fun to get out the draw knife again after a long break from it. Hope to make this one work this time and to get a selfbow under my belt.
One question for you talented selfbow guys... Dry or steam heat for this?
I will see what I can come up with. I don't really have a form for a "kids" bow. The shortest I can do is 56 inches. But I think adult bows would draw more money for the charity. But I'm open to suggestions on draw weight/length.
Shawn
Dry heat.
Thanks Roy... Pearly told me that too so now I know which direction to go
Justin - Didn't you trust Pearly's recommendation alone and you needed the wisdom of the old man for confirmaion?
John, almost sounds like Pearly told him last, so now he knows for sure??
Dave, where are those stats? I got a plan goin in my feeble mind since ya signed me up fer me... :D :D
McKenzie, I drove past your shop tonight, but decided not to shoot...
:biglaugh:
Any word on specs for a glass kids bow?
good stuff fellas!!! :notworthy:
I taped the bow I have here. 48 tip to tip with a 12 inch riser. Black glass on both sides with one lam of bamboo. The width is about 7/8 at the fades and tapers to 1/2 inch tips with no overlays. The bow is marked 23@25 and both my ten year old and seven year old shoot it fine. The tapers are about four incheslong. The handle is an inch and a half thick and is two 3/4 in pieces of walnut. Hope this helps. Remember if it comes in heavy you can sand off some width and there is no such thing as too light, just needs a younger kid.

I have never done it but if I was going to build a kids bow I would get myself some 2" glass. Glue up a bow with a single actionboo parallel and about a 8-10" riser with the thinnest glass I could find for back and belly.
Then after glue up just cut it in half on the table saw and square it up in the drum sander. Take to profile and boom you have two bows from one glue up.
Hope this helps!

I have an osage bow in the works for my daughter, at the moment. 55"ttt. It is still 25# @ 20" which is a bit much for her but she will grow into it. Osage can get pretty thin when trying to get down to these weights. I will see what I have and may end up doing a couple of quivers and arrows to go along with someones bows.
That would be great. I have my second one almost tillered and need to sand it all down and add overlays and probably some snake skins. I'll post pics next week.
Worked on my St. Judes donation bow tonight. 48" tip to tip, Osage backed with Hickory. These short kids bows are tuffer than I thought:) I need to get some weight off it. Gotta thin her down from flares to tips I guess.. Just ruffed in as of now.

That's looking pretty nice Roy. I agree these little bows take almost as much time as the full sized ones. They are easier to sand though. Just keep taking weight off until you can almost pull it and then you will be there.
I can see it is pretty wide for the weight I need to attain.
And I can see your wide mouth just got ya to the top O the Thumpin list again:)
Geez it took me almost three days of poking at you. I must be getting soft.
Careful DVS our ol man is getting slow... Not his fault just aging quicker than we all thought LMAO!!!
Your on the Thumpin list too, Boy:)

geeze Kenny what about this kid???[3rd grader--] :D
(http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj319/kittitiny/imagesCAB5H4W7.jpg)
I'll see what I have in kid's sized staves...
Oh,and my daughter says that her first bow, a little Rhino from when she was 4, can go to the auction along with some arrows. :)
Mike, what have you been feeding Mikey. He'll be even better at dragging them deer out of the woods for you.
Hey Guys - If your wondering about dimensions for glass laminated kids bow, here's an example I just finished up for my 6 year-old son.
Straight limb "mini-Hill" style
48" nock-to-nock
1" wide at fades tapering to 3/8" at nocks
11.5" riser, 1 1/18" deep
0.040 black glass back and belly
one 0.002 taper hard maple lam, 0.140" butt thickness
Camo actionwood riser courtesy of Kenny
It pulls 14.5 # at 20"....12# at my son's draw and that seems to be a weight he can handle well right now.
No need to build another form. I just glued it up on the same one I use for my Hill style bows and added a bunch of shims around the riser.

Good lookin boy and bow!! Nice job John!!
Thanks Kenny. He thinks that camo actionwood is just the coolest thing ever in a bow. And he keeps bugging for me to put beaver balls on it. Need to get some.
Very awesome pictures, bow, and son, John.
And he has better form than his Ole Man:)
How bout some bobcat and a pair of no-gloves? I have em if you want em...
John I have a whole Beaver hide that I can cut the beaver balls out of, " no pun intended McKenzie " :) I can send ya a pair or two, John. LOL this is getting funny.
Think I'll go to bed now:)
Kenny & Roy - Thanks for the offers guys.
Jonathan's got the hang of shooting with a tab I made him - he just didn't grab it when he came out for a couple pics. So save the no-gloves for another young archer.
Bobcat would be really cool, but so would the beaver balls lovingly trimmed by Roy.
Cool!
"Bobcat would be really cool, but so would the beaver balls lovingly trimmed by Roy"
AHEM.... Roy?? Got anythin to add??
Better start wif a beaver before ya try a bobcat is all I kin tell ya.... :bigsmyl:
 I think the old boy was tired and is snoring now.
Good morning:) John pm me your address and I'll send ya a couple pair. How long ya want them? 5 inches ok?

the kids been eating them before he can get them to the truck!!
I've been reading for a good while before I signed up, but this is something that hits home for me. My only son passed away in January due to multiple congenital deformities, one day before he turned two.
I'm only building my first bow, but I have a completed powderhorn here that isn't too bad looking, if I say so myself. Would you guys be interested in it, and if so, how do I do this? I want to help keep other parents from the pain and loss we feel. My son was not curable, and in the end nothing medicine knew could help him, but our Father did. But every day we know more, and I live in hope of that myself. Please let me know, I would love to honor my son's memory by helping.
Ed,
I'm sorry for you loss. Someone will be along that can tell you how the St Jude auction works and how to donate items. I'm not sure myself.
John,
Great job on that bow for your son! Very nice.
Ed, PM sent.
Just saw that we can start posting pics of the bows on the st. Jude forum listing. Don't forget some good pics.
Got a bow done today, it won't be goin to the St Judes, it has a couple fat glue lines.
Buuut will take some pics and maybe offer to build one like it in their choice of color and possible weight change...
Or should I just build another next weekend and it is what it is? Hmmmm
Rebuilt my form to cure the glue line probs BTW...
Kenny, its up to you, but I doubt a kid would even notice the glue lines. I'm sure you are being picky. Also no reason you couldn't make two. ;)
Mine is ready for shaping the handle and final sanding, 48" tip to tip and 14# at 15 inches. Finally a bow I can draw back:)

Looking good Roy.
I have my first one posted in forum 4 already. I hope I can get at least one more finished. I have one almost there, just need to sand it down and pretty it up.
This is the first bow off the new kid's bow press, it has a fat glue line on riser belly so it is stayin here locally.
This one is 50" ntn, 24# @ 22" and 28# @ 24"
Angle cut veneers, maple core, really zips an arrow.
24" is max draw for best results. any more it may stack and shouldn't be drawn farther.
I will build one just like it for the auction winner in this color(Desert Camo) , or Green Mountain camo, or Charcoal Grey , or Nutmeg Brown.
Your kid can have a custom just like Dad does!
He/She can pick their color and you can help em with the fine points like draw length and weight.

Very nice, Kenny. I notice ya can't pull it all the way back.
Nope, scared it will get away from me. I made it to yer draw weight 24@22"....
LOL
That's a cool little bow Kenny.
It is cool! I went ahead and built a top form for it, my hose and rope deal didn't go as planned!
I'm gonna build it to suit the auction winning bidder and this one goes to a little gal at the local pro shop. Her Dad and bro are gonna hunt with longbows this year, Bro killed a hog in TX with his and got em all fired up!!
Now they know it will get r done and they are wound up!!
What the matter Kenny, is your hose too short? :)
That's looks wicked cool Kenny. Good idea to use those pics and let the winner decide the final specs. That should bring a higher bid for the kiddos too.
I spent last night working on my second kids bow for the auction. I shot it quite a bit yesterday and it smokes an arrows pretty well.It has about 18 inches of working limb and u was drawing it out to 23 in. It starts to stack there because I recurved the tips a bit. I still need to finish sanding, put a rest on it, skin it and finish it up. Oh and out the other tip overlay on it to. I am using gemsbuck horn this time. My phone is still on the fritz so I can't post pics of anything for awhile.
Just an update. It broke! I have some bad juju going on in my shoo for some reason. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
That's two in a row now.
Thats kinda what I thought Dave, also choice of 4 colors...
Hate that about your bow, you may have to try a glass one.... :)
Oh Kenny, that just wasn't right son...
Hows youall's glass bow comin there son? :D
Not mine, it's Dennys and you know that. Tip overlays glued on and ready to be cut out. Read your email son:)
Roy, say it ain't so! Kenny dun got you turned.
Not me... I promise:)
Y'ull b next Roy !
When pigs fly:)
Ok got my kids bow listed. Made a left handed one.
Hope there are a,few out there.

Nice, Ron.
Got the little bow stained and the first coat of tung oil on her. Looks purty cute. 48 tip to tip, 14# @ 15 inches. I'm betten ole Sister McKenzie might be able to draw her back:)
The glass one?
Ah so ya took one of your smart A$$ pills today I see:)
:D
Hey Guys - I've got my St Judes kids bow done except for a few coats of finish. Besides writing the poundage and draw length on the bow are you writing anything else special or signing your name on it?
Well I am, John.
Right under the 14# @ 15 inches.
I'm writing to Kenny M, with Love. LMAO
Thanks Roy, kin ya shave a couple # off it tho?
Ifin I haf too:)
How about 12# @ 15 inches, son?
That'll work son.
BTW that is yer draw weight too? 12 oz. @ 15", right?
Yes in throw away cans, ya mart a$$ :)
Oh and I put on the 3rd coat of tung oil on Pennys bow tonight... :)
That ain't tongue oil, now is it? :D
LMAO
Put the 4th coat on the kids bow tonight. One more otta do it.
Got two coats on mine.
Your camera broke, Squeaky?
It works. Just been lazy. I'll get some pics up when I'm done with all coats of finish.
It came in at 16# @ 20". So it will entertaining watching you and Kenny in a bidding war for it.
16 oz at 20" !! Whew, only Roy kin handle that!!
LOL
OK, here's some pics of the bow. Curly maple riser and brown glass.

Great looking bow John!
Looks good Monkeyboy!! (and Dad)
Oh I guess it's ok.
John, that picture of Monkeyboy is priceless...
An 16# @ 20 is perfect for Sister McKenzie:)
So sorry it is too heavy for ya Roy, I'll send ya some vitamins.....
I had my vitamin B tonight sir:)
Thanks guys. Hopefully others will like it and it will generate some $$ for the auction.
Got the arrow rest, side plate, and grip on, just gotta make a new string and she is done.
I don't have time to get another kids bow done, got to get my swap bow workin. So I have a couple of kids sized back quivers in the works. Should have them ready to post in a couple of days. I'll put some pics up when they are done. They are short and the leather has a slightly pink tinge to it, so there will be one for both Roy and Kenny. Maybe I'll only put one in and enjoy the bidding war they will have.
You guys are great! These bows are awesome. I have been super busy and haven't been able to make a second bow for the auction. I still have time, but I doubt I can get one done in time.
I won't be biddin against Roy on anything short and pink, I just wouldn't look as good as him in that kind of attire...
Buuut I did just put 2 sets of plans and templates on the block, a 58/60 and a 62/64 D/R longbow .....
I kin paint the template pink if Tony or Roy happens to buy em too...
Sounds like ya gots lots of pink dye and paint out there boy:)
All you could ever need, sonny!
I'll make y'all a deal. I don't have a kids bow form. But I do have a kid. I just listed to build a custom grownup bow and ill bid like crazy to win one of your kid bows. How's that?
Bonner
It's now on the auction site. 14# @ 15" 48 tip to tip, Osage backed with Hickory. Flemish Twist string with adjustable string nocks.

Did your wife string it for you Roy?
Very elegant Roy. Kenny will be bidding that sucker up over $1000+.
I'll bid fifty cents on it.
Keep your fifty cents. Your gonna need it for band aids after I catch up wif ya boy:)
Well here are a couple of pics of the quivers that I have put up for auction. Hope they match someones bow nicely.
Roy that is a real nice looking bow, some kid is going to be real happy.
Sounds like Kenny has enough short pink stuff to keep him happy, so Roy it may be up to you

I've got my horn completed for the auction, can someone tell me how to add it?
Never mind, I got it. My powder horn is posted.
Hey DVS - Thank you for starting this St. Judes challenge and inspiring me to make a kids bow for it.
Check out this thread over on the Pow Wow. This really warmed my heart and is what it's all about.

Thats great john. I had a great time watching theauction this year and I plan on doing it again next year.
Good deal, John.
