I glued my handle riser onto my Ipe flatbow a couple of days ago with titebond III. I was tillering the bow today and the handle just fell off. I thought I had a good tight fit and I cleaned both pieces with acetone before glue up.
I'm gonna resand and reglue but I would love to hear any suggestions ya'll have to make the second attempt my final.
Sounds like the bow is bending in the handle area. Perhaps an extra lam between the handle and ipe will help reduce the bend in that portion.
Just my thoughts... :dunno:
Had this happen to me and that's how I dealt with the problem.

I agree adding maybe a 1/4 inch or less slat that is a little longer between the handle and then shaping that into the bows taper might help.
I don't use acetone to clean oily woods like Ipe because it just pulls out more oil. Maybe this was part of the problem.
Yup what they said.
Yup what Roy said.
I have some hickory and osage slats that I could use. How much longer should they be than the handle? The handle is 8". The bow is bending slightly in the handle area.
If the bow is bending at the handle then that is what's popping off the handle. I make them 13 inches.
take a look at my build along here: http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=009703;p=1
and you can see how all the guys helped me avoid this problem. there is also an explanation of a couple of ways to avoid it here: http://www.poorfolkbows.com/ipe1.htm
hope that helps
Yeah, you're always going to have a problem with handles popping off if the bow bends through the handle much at all.
I don't use acetone either, I don't know if it pulls more oil up or not, but it hasn't helped thats for sure so I take the word of those more experienced. I just make sure my glue surfaces are freshly surfaced (sanded or planed or whatever).
It's possible to glue on a riser to a bendy handle bow and have it not pop off but the key is really long really gradual fades. But its definately not Ideal.
Check out poorfolkbows as Echatham said.
Ya'll are just a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all the help.
Now for more details. I have grooved bows and risers and used bow grip 100 and smooth on. I have sanded them smooth and used titebond III. Some successful and some not. Seems that I struggle when trying to get the 2 pieces to match up. I put them together and hold them up to the light to see how tight they are and I just keep sanding and sanding.
What ways have ya'll found most successful?
Man those are some beautiful bows in these threads. Makes mine look primitive. LOL!
Get one side flat then match the other side to it. My belly slat is flat from being cut out on the band saw and so are my risers so there is not much sanding to do. Before glue up I run a toothing plane on both surfaces and that will even them up even more. I used urac before but now use unibond800 which is a gap filling glue.

My risers are 13 inches long and taper into the limbs.

My biggest challenge was getting the riser wood to fit the bow after, glue up.
My solution is to us a stack of slats 1/4 inch thick or less.
Butter them all up with glue and clamp starting in the middle so it will pull in tight to the bow. That way the bend is glued in.
I've never had a handle come of.
My bows riser section has a curve to it after glue up, I lay the riser block on it's side and lay the bows riser section on the riser and trace that curve out, then cut very close to the line, then just use hand tools for a perfect fit.
I also leave the limbs the same width as the flares out another 6 inches, then do a straight taper to the tips. Doing this strengthens the area just outside of the riser ends and keeps that area from bending too much or bending back into the end of the riser.
Well that gives me some options. I hope I can salvage this bow. I was so looking forward to shooting it. Seems I have the Midas tough here lately. Something goes wrong with every bow I touch.
the Midas touch means everything you touch turns to gold. Just so ya know!

My gold is tainted. LOL!
