So I realized if I wanted a decent sanding machine, I'm gonna have to fork over some money. I'm looking at the grizzly belt/disc combo that goes for 725, and their edge sander, which goes for somewhere around the same price.
So, if you didn't have a sanding machine, which would you get?
Thanks!
Edge hands down. Most usuful machine there is for bow building imho.
Edge sander is my vote too...I would probably go with the Grizzly with the wrap around table and smaller roller as well if I were to do it over again. (G0512)
GO512 x 2. The most used tool in my shop. Bob
Does the GO512 have a spindle sander attachment?
Then it is decided! Rarely do people agree on things, so when they do it makes choices rather obvious haha. Thanks.
I guess I would kill for a good edger- and enough space for one in my shop...
I hope the DIY 12" discsander I´m workin on will bring some advantage anyway- the ones comined to beltsanders I worked with are rather toys or for real small workpieces.
So I totally agree- edgesander is one of the cooles toys for bowyers especially those with a straight frontroller to be used as a spindlesander (oscillation shall even be quite usefull)
I was short before buying a very similar to the one used in following vid- cheap auction on ****- but then I realised how hard it would get to get in my basement so I resigned (It was sold for 300bucks only

)
Greatest boying vid of all times maybe?! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HAYRVtxHMU)
LOL tha bay gets automatically "cencored" *rofl*
Dammit just checked out Ridgid oscillating spindle/beltsander after having seen it in too many buildalongs- that would be THE thing for my shop.
But why why why it is not available in my country? I could cry...
Interesting video, that guy was sure eating a lot of dust. Bue--. :scared:
Edge sanded all the way.
Have the GO512, love it, wish the small roller was 2" instead of 2.125" , but thats bein picky!! The 2" on my spindle just fits my bows grip area better!! LOL
I had the Go512 and sold it when I bought a bigger one. Kind of regret selling it as the small idler wheel worked well.
I have since added two more belt sanders and going to build a 3rd. Don't know what I would do with out them.
I have a bunch of sanders, but have no use for a disc and can't see how it would be of any advantage if you had the belt.
bigjim
I wish my idler was 2 as well. Kenny your not being picky.
Could you have the 2 1/8" idler turned down to 2" by a machine shop? Or have them build one for you?
If budget is an issue, you can get by with a 6" x 48" Belt sander/disc combo from Harbor Freight for around $200. Not as good as an edge sander, and you do not need the disc, but $200?
If budget is not an issue the edge sander will be with you for the rest of your bow building days!
I wish I could buy an edge sander. But I cannot own anythign which does not fit in an apt.
This is basically like asking, belt sander or bigger belt sander since thats basically what an edge sander is. Choice is simple is you have the space/money. With that said, you also at least need a cheap belt sander for small pieces.
Well because of you boys, I just ordered the Grizzly GO512 edge sander. It's all yunzs fault, ya all baited me in like a kid with candy. SO I think yunzs all should send me a monetary gift to help pay for it. Now what's ya all think bout dat?
:wavey:
Every time I've been in the a grizzly store I drool one that one.
Wife says can't buy one till I sell my old shopsmith stuff.
Looking for a report once you put it through it's paces.
How much ya need, Roy? :D
Heres a G0512 modified with a profile sander on the big end and I use the small end to shape the grip on the risers and of course grind the limbs on the length of the sander. And of course a zillion other little jobs. Bob

Send me what ya can afford, Kenny:)
Very nice, Bob. And in your picture under your name, is that a real deer sneaking behind you? :)
Yep Roy, thats a mulie doe that walked right down my driveway. I didn't even know it was there untill I looked at the pic.We have lots of them here, they are in the yard all winter and raise their fawns here in the yard.We think they hang around here so much because the wolves won't come into the yard. :scared: :bigsmyl: Bob
LOL, cool Bob.
Nice to have those pets in the yard!
Whoo Hoo, just got an e-mail that my G0512 was shipped and should be here in a day or two:)
Yer gonna love it!!
Mine just arrived today, along with the g0555 :) . They forgot the table though...frustrating.
The 555 looks like a cool saw, and along with the 512, your gonna be a happy dog:) I just put a set of roller bearings on my saw a month ago, what a difference they make!
Just got the call, the sander will be here tomorrow at 2PM:)Now I gotta get busy and run a 220 volt line to where I'm gonna put it. Oh darn. LOL
Well I got it, but the dude was late and had a 40 footer tractor trailer, so I met him off the turnpike exit and we transferred it to my truck along the side of the road. Made me late for work but hell I'm the Boss, so the sander is still in the bed of my truck, sitting in the garage till tomorrow. That damn thing is heavy:)
Oh and Kenny sent me a whole 25 cents to help out with the payments.. Thanks, Bro :jumper:
No prob Roy, just don't spend it on wine... :goldtooth:
It's up and running and I love it:)
Nice! I'm still waiting for my table!! Supposed to show up today though.
Roy how hard was it to get off the truck?
I bought a used 1073 Grizzly bandsaw a few years ago..it Weighs 430 lbs, it was harder to load it into my truck than to unload it. Gravity helped with the unloading, it came with the shop fox wheels..I am thinking about the Grizzly wrap around edge sander now.
It wasn't bad at all, Ron. I backed the truck up to about 3 feet from the shop door and my buddy and I slid it off the tailgate and down to the ground, spun it end wise and slid it into the shop. Took about an hour to assemble it.
Heck Roy, I carry mine around the shop all the time. :D :D
Your what, beer? :)
I got the go513x2 the shipper kept telling me it would be there I would wait they would not show upI would call the shipper they would save next time tomorrow then grizzly would call Me and wonder why I would not accept delivery I would explain it to them we did that dance for 4 days finally got my new sAw....that Edge sander sure looks nice but I don't know if I want to go through that headache again!
Finally got the go ahead on the sander.
Drove down to,Springfield yesterday and picked up a G 0512
And a roller base. Wife and,I managed to,get it,off the truck this morning.
Won't be able to,set it up or anything till Monday.
So your spoiled too? LOL
Yea, I told her Roy's wife left him have one. :dunno:
Yea, I told her Roy's wife left him have one. :dunno:
ROFLMAO:)
They don't come with a plug on the end of the AC cord, they have terminal ends on. I just ran the wire inside the outlet box and screwed them onto the screws of the outlet socket, just a heads up Ron.
Was just looking at that. I have a window A/C that is going to the scrap pile. I'll use it's circuit but I have to run a line up and to the other side of the shop. Since I've got the plug and outlet will probably go that route.
They are pre wired for 220 volts, it can be changed to 110.
I thought I had an active 220 wall plug that was originally for a dryer, so I ran an extension onto the wires coming from the sander and added the plug, only to find that the previous tenant had just chopped the line like 4 feet from the circuit box, and removed the 220 breaker from the circuit box. So I pulled the wall plug from the wall, moved it in between the circuit box and where the sander will be, installed a 220v breaker in the circuit box, and finally got everything up and going!! Now it's really getting exciting! haha.
What would you change about your edge sander if you could? I found an old one with 128" belt and 1.5 hp. motor.
Going to redo the stand and table. If it was you what drums, tables or features would you build in?
Lou
I like my Grizzly and wouldn't change a thing. But as has been said above, some folks would like a little smaller end roller for their riser work.
Well I settled on 6x89 as it is a stock belt around here. I'd like ideas how to make or buy drums. One for shaping and one for patterns.
I know a top notch machinist but he is always too busy. Otherwise I might part with a set of limbs maybe even a riser..
