Title: Thoughts on tiller (Updated photo's)
Post by: razorback on March 09, 2013, 12:41:00 PM
I am working on this little Osage bow for my daughter. It is 55" ntn and I am shooting for 20# @20" or there abouts. The left limb has a little wiggle in it just out from the fade which makes it look like it has a weak spot. The gizmo is telling me that I am close, with te right limb being a little stronger.
Tell me what you think of the tiller and where it needs some help. I am thinking of flipping the tips a little and adding some overlays.

Unstrung.

3 1/2" brace.

18" draw.

And with Roy's trick.

Not bad for a New Yorker:) I'd get the area just outside the fades bending a little more.

Thanks Roy, I agree that the area near the fades needs a little work. I really like this trick with the oval, shows a lot.

Can't wait to see her at full draw with her new bow.

Looking good! I vote yes on overlays, and I'm neutral on flipped tips. that bow is well on its way.

Be careful using the Gizmo on, or transposing arcs and ellipses onto bows with irregularities in ther unstrung profiles. It can cause you to remove wood where you shouldn't, or neglect areas you should be working on. In such cases the bow won't be optimally tillered so that each inch of limb contibutes its share with stress distributed equally. In some bows it can be enough to cause inefficiency, poor limb timing, arrow porpoise, handshock, etc. Not all bows should conform to a perfect arc, eliptical shape, show uninterrupted Gizmo lines, or whatever during the draw or at full draw. Nor should they all be tillered to show a predetermined brace height measurement(like 1/4" positive) for the same reasons.

Ya gotta remember where they come from.

Thanks Bowjunkie, that is good advice and I think I have made that error before. Here are some updated photo's. Here it is at 4 1/2" brace and drawn to 20". I think I need to take a little off the outer 1/3rd, especially from the right limb. I shot a couple of dozen arrows through it and it zipped them but had some hand shock. I need to narrow the tips and that might do it plus increasing brace a little. I still have some weight to play with.
Please let me know what you think.

Here are two shots of the bow being drawn by a friends kid. It is still too stiff for my daughter, so I have some good room for fine tuning. The limbs are flipped in each photo. The first one is with the limb that is on the left on the tree.
