Hi folks,
I`m looking for a/the way to prepare my split boo lams to look like the ones great plains uses or as seen on some boo backed bows;
Noticeable grain and dark pronounced nodes. (More like outside a boopipe than a flattened lam)
I tried a blowtorch but the result looked horrible- so I wonder is it just heat caused or do they use some dye or stain?
Thanks in advance!
If I understand correctly you are talking about flat laminations ground from 1 piece of bamboo, not laminated line actionboo. I' e never done this but my guess is that the lamination will stain like you want because the fibers of the bamboo will be more broken at the node and not broken much at the internode. Should stain darker at the node the same way figured maple stains in dark/ light patches depending on grain. You can also get the effect by careful application of more stain to certain areas. Hope this helps. I saw Eric Kreswon had a build along for a natural bamboo backed bow with a similar pattern he achieved using dye. You can search it here on TG.
Yes you got me right; like this one I mentioned:
Cazador @ 3rivers (http://www.3riversarchery.com/great+plains+58%26quot%3B+sr+swift+cazador+takedown+recurve_i2280X_baseitem.html)
It looks so cool I`d love to copy the technique....
