Title: BBO question about brace ht.
Post by: Buxndiverdux on February 05, 2013, 08:48:00 PM
It is 65" NTN and I have had it on a 63" string bending it getting it worked down enough to brace. When it was on the 63" it would bend the limbs a litte but the string would touch the handle. When on the 63 I worked it to around 13-14" and it was in the low 40's. Both limbs looked good at that point. Once I got it bending enough to brace, I braced it on a 61" string and it ended up being 9 1/4" at brace. One limb is looking weaker than the other now. I stopped here because the 9 1/4" brace height just jumped out at me. I figured it would be around 6 or so. My guess is I need to try a 62". What do you guys think? It is currently 36lb at 16". Thanks

62 will probably be close. I like my fistmile which is 6 inches brace on my R/D BBI bows.
Depending on the amount of R/D the string length varies.

The 62" string has it braced at 7" but I still have a weak limb. I wonder why that didn't show up on the long string? I still have plenty of weight to work it out, but what gives? I was ultra careful.

The trouble with the long string is it lies. Or at least doesn't put the same pressure on the limbs a shorter string does.

So the general rule for me is as soon as I can get it bending enough I put a shorter string on it.

I long string only until I can get a short brace of about 3". The long string pulls the bow tips at a different angle than a short string and will give you a falce reading. Get the bow to low brace ASAP.

The very first time I put a tillering string on a bow it lays tight against the belly of the handle.Once tips are bending 6 inches I go to a 3 inch brace height. Once tips are bending 9 inches I go to a 6 inch brace. Those extra long tiller strings lie.

What part of the limb do you work on to get the "tips bending 6 inches"?

Once I get the limbs bending enough to brace, I use the gizmo to final tiller to my desired weight.

You want to see the whole limb bending in a nice 1/4 moon arc. There will not be much arc when the tips are only bending to 6 inches, but there should be an arc. What you do not want is hinges or flat spots. If your using the gizmo then you are doing well. But do not use one of those extra long tillering strings. They lie.
