Title: home made tools
Post by: KHALVERSON on January 22, 2013, 07:04:00 PM
im pretty new to bowyering but not new to making
a few of my own tools
i decided that i wanted to try a small draw knife  so i figured why buy when i can make
if ya got some home made tools that you would like to post
i would love to see em
here is the small draw knife made from a simmonds file with a few simple tools and techniques
sharpens with a sharp file pretty easily and seems to hold an edge well
6.5 cutting edge and hickory handles

Hey Roy, That stave in the picture with the scraper is what I made Pearly's bow from.  It has some beautiful color to it.

Kevin, I like that drawknife.

Hey Duck that is the same electric hand plainer blade that I use as a scraper and it does a great job.  I don't have a handle on mine though.

I've got all kinds of self made tools, just not many specifically for bow building because I haven't made a bow yet.  But here are some that count for it...

Harvesting tools/hewing/scraping

Soon to be hones for broad heads, harvested and lapped by me

single pin spindle wrench for a micrometer

And my most valuable and favorite is the helper I made 3 years ago

Cheers

I think all you guys have helpers.  Everything I make has little red drops on it where I leak when scratched or nicked.

glad you posted Scrubby...been looking for a design for a feather burner.

It works great.  I take one of the battery charger clamps off and clean the wire off with a tooth brush after each arrow.

There really isn't much to it.  I used a scrap piece of 1x8, drilled a couple of holes in it, used two carriage bolts, nuts, and washers for the posts.  I used some more scrap wood for the arrow supports.  I bought the ribbons from 3rivers for $2 each.  I have an old battery charger that I clamp to the posts and the wire heats up.  That's about it.

Scrub-buster, what amp setting on the battery charger do you use for your burner?  1.5, 3, 6.  I would think that matters, maybe not though.  I may be making a burner like that.

My charger has a 6 amp and a 12 amp setting.  I am pretty sure I use the 6 amp.  Start off with the lowest setting on yours and if it doesn't work move on to the next one.  Practice on an old feather.  Once it gets hot enough it will burn right through the feather with ease.
