Here is the worlds largest in Virginia.

And here is one that was estimated at 400 years old that sandy toppled while destroying everything else.

The top section is still there.  I'm planning on getting it when it warms up.  Should be at least one more 7' section.

I was told that it grows here in SW Ontario, but I've never seen one. This far north, they must be small and scrubby.   :(

All I need is a chainsaw, a uhaul and Roy's address

No osage up here for me, and all the yew grows 300 miles away in the west side, or as we call it "liberal land", and the bunny humpers dont like ya cutting any trees.

I went to the west side last saturday, but could not get my brother to stop long enough to let me go find a nice yew tree, and of all the nerve, he said I could not tie it to his wifes
subaru  :dunno:
Some people have all the luck, thanks for sharing the pics, they made me drool too!

That looks too much like work. My Bud in Ohio cuts it, splits it, hauls it to his house, then calls me and I go over and he helps me load it on the truck:) I love free Osage...

There is enough Osage on his 65 acres to last me the rest of my life and were gonna cut some every spring.

This was at a local 3d shoot a few years ago, please excuse my buddys compound. The course was in a creek bottom and osage trees were plentiful there, although not many of them were this straight. I'll try to dig up some better pics later today.

I've had this one eyed out on my father's farm for years and I just haven't had the time to go cut it down.  I've seen the same bark on some really snaky osage before so I hope it's the same underneath this one.

One of my favorites, from 2004:

We didn't cut that one but found a few more manageable ones.  We had to carry them pretty far though.

My (then 6 year old son) James helped with the splitting chores.

This is the best I can do. This was a seedling given to me for a B-day present by a friend about 5 or 6 years ago. I know I'll never get to see it any near as big as the ones shown above but at least I can dream. d;^) We have very few osage trees around here. A couple I know of are right along a state road and the NCDOT keeps it pruned with their bush hog on a stick.
Anyway here is my favorite osage tree...

All of these pics were within 50 yards of my back door. I think I was destined to become a bowyer.

The base of this tree is interesting.  It comes out of the ground and is folded over for about 3' before it turns and goes up.

Pat, it has been my go to bow for almost 3 years now. I made up my mind that I would hunt it until we score. Came real close last year on a nice buck and didn't bow hunt 1 day this year! Times have been a little rough and my work takes most of my time anymore. Plus I got's me two Grandchildren, I've lost most of my private land hunting to people moving away, selling it, splitting up of land or passing away. My WMA is 25 miles there and 25 back plus it gets hunted pretty hard.
Anyway, you're right. I like the bow very much!

Thanks Roy  :bigsmyl:

Okie64,

Maybe a dumb question, but what are the green round looking things on the ground around your trees?  Couldnt quit make them out, put to curious to not ask.

Thanks,

Joe,

Never had private land to hunt up here, and the edges of the city just keep moving out more all the time. Now its about the same as you, 20-25 each way to get somewhere to legally hunt.
Tons of deer in closer, but all the bunny huggers wont let anyone hunt them, all they do is take pics and complain when they hit em.

Post by: Pat B on January 27, 2013, 02:11:00 PM
Joe, I totally understand. In the last 3 years, except for my trip to Colorado, I have hunter one day, two sits. I seen way more deer while driving to work than I have sitting in the woods.

Post by: okie64 on January 27, 2013, 03:31:00 PM
Frosty, Im guessin you dont have many osage trees where youre at. Those are horseapples or some people call em hedgeapples, they grow on the female osage orange trees. Squirrels are the only thing that Ive ever seen eat them.  Around here if you say osage orange tree most people wont know what you're talkin about but if you say horseapple tree they know exactly what you're referring to. Heres a pic of em on the tree

This is probably my favorite piece of osage on my place.  It looks like a tortured old soul.  I thought about cutting it and using it to hold bows for pictures but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Right behind it is a fallen osage with rabbit and other critter tracks going up it.  I didn't know rabbits would go up a tree like that.  He went up several leaning trees in the area.

There are less than 109 bows in that left trunk.  I only like to cut trees that have fallen over.  That happens to a lot of the big trees on my place.

That's a leaner!  :scared:  Anything but the trunk of that tree is in my opinion, fire wood.
Too many wind checks in that old tree grown out in the open. I bet there is some nice character bows in that old trunk.

That tree is old. There is fence wire embedded and a treated 4x4 stuck up in there. I can't believe they didn't take it down when the widened the road.

You lucky dogs. I live in Georgia and have never seen an Osage orange tree. I'm using hickory for my selfbows. I have plenty of hickory if someone wants to trade.

This was one of many trees in a long hedgerow near Valley Forge in PA. Straight bole for 30'. Hiking trail ram alongside and there were dozens of trees like this one. Kept finding hedge apples and it took me a minute to realize these giants were Osage. I'm 6'4".

An old friend has a hug osage tree growing on his property. It's the only one I can recall seeing in NY. Must have been planted years ago on that old farm. The house there had been one of the first ones built in the area. It had a cupaloon the top of the house. Iv' been told the oldest houses had these for watching out for the Iroquios.   :dunno:

It's kinda in a public place. Bring a hand saw and head lamp. We're gonna hafta go dark on this one. Keep it on the low down! In and out, nothin but hand signals.
