Hi fellas,
I'm attemting a hickory self bow. This is my second try as the first was a disaster. I think I'm close on this one but would like to see what you all think. I think it still needs a little work on the bottom limb but am very close to even tiller after starting with about 3/8 positive, I'm now just shy of 1/8. I shoot split finger. I'm close to my target weight of 50# at 26. I'm 52#.

To my eye the right limb is bending just a wee bit more close to the fades than the left limb, but that could just be the way it is sitting on the tiller stick. Tips are nice and even and looks pretty good to me.
Hope my hickory bows come out looking that good.
Thanks razorback, that's what I'm seeing too. I've been hitting the left/bottom limb right out from the fade but keep losing my positve tiller so am confused what to do with it.
Have you shot the bow yet? I normally start shooting mine in a bit then working on final tillering. Start with partial draw shooting.
The tiller is looking pretty good. The top (right side) limb looks weaker overall but stiffer mid limb, the left (bottom) limb looks stiffer coming out of the fades.
I'd shoot it before doing final adjustments. Shoot, adjust, shoot, adjust etc. Most likely your tiller will change a bit with the shooting in process. Good luck.

It doesn't look bad at all, but I would get both limbs bending a tad more right out of the fades.

Brad, I was about to suggest one of Erik's gizmos as well. The right limb looks stiff midlimb and the left is much stiffer in the fades. I would shoot it a bit, and use the gizmo to fine tune. Good luck.
I worked on it some more but had to wait till my wife had time to take a pic for me. Sure was a big difference between how I had it placed on the tree and when I actually drew it. It does shoot well and I'm surprised how little hand shock I'm getting.

I think it needs to bend more in the first 3rd of the top limb but I'm running out of weight. I flipped it over and it looks the same either way. It's measures even tiller when I put the ruler to it.
It's got 1 1/2" set when I unstring it but goes to 1/2" after it sets for a while. I don't know whether to go any more on it or not. It's 68" now and I could cut it back but would end up at 64". I kinda hate to mess with it as it does shoot well for me.

I do have a gizmo but I think I need to make it longer. Mine's 4" and I think it would work better made the right length.
Brad - I think it looks pretty dang good and would leave it as is if it's shooting good for ya, but I'm certainly no wood bow expert.
If you can tiller that bow that well, you'll have no problem once you build that glass laminated Hill style :thumbsup:

I've went as far as I can on the Hill project. My lams came today from Kenny M. That fella doesn't mess around!. He emailed me Friday evening with the price and they were here today. I'm waiting on my stuff from Binghams now.
I figured I'd try that hickory blank that I've had for 3 years, now that I have a hot box to keep her in while I was working it.

Looks pretty good, Brad. but you look like a leftie trying to shoot from the wrong side of the bow.
:D No, I shoot right handed but have terrible form, plus I was trying to keep the top tip out of the ceiling. I need a room inside with higher ceilings for these after dark tiller shots.

Brad, in the hand, it looks pretty dern good! And looking at the group it put up, I would be thrilled myself. I will disclaim that I am FAR from being any kind if expert, but it looks very, very good.
By the way, a 4-inch gizmo can do as good a job as a longer one, but you just have to be very particular about how you employ it. Mine is just over 5 inches, but does what it should, so long as I don't rush.
