Title: Hickory backing thickness
Post by: ChrisM on December 18, 2012, 06:55:00 AM
Ok here question #3.  I am building an american longbow designed Yew bow with Hickory backing.  I will be starting with a 1" thick by 1.5" wide.  I want the bow to be near 60# at my long 25" draw.  The demisions that I am using a like the ones in the vol 1 of the Trad Bowyers bible. So about how thick should I plane it to?
Thanks

I cut hickory backing strips out at 3/16" thick and by the time I've sanded both surfaces smooth it comes out 1/8" or slightly less. You don't need more than 1/8" thick.
