Title: Refinishing question
Post by: 44charlie on December 07, 2012, 10:33:00 AM
I need to refinish a self bow and I'd like a dull non glare clear finish. What should I use? I'll be stripping off glossy urethane.

Thanks guys

If the glossy that is on it is in good shape but just shiny.you could steel wool it then use satin over it.

Gloss finish is usually sprayed on in 3 to 4 coats first followed by satin so it doesn't shine.

The reason for gloss is it is a much harder finish.

Even the satin can be steel wooded to make I'd less reflective.

Just spray satin poly over the gloss finish. I do that with Tru-Oil finish because it is so shiney.

I would suggest leaving the existing urethane on it and simply go over as others have suggested.

I agree, just steel wool it lightly and spray with a satin finish.
