Title: mailbox post bow
Post by: b.glass on November 29, 2012, 04:04:00 PM
Do you think this ERC post would make a bow? It could be atleast 48" or if laid out right a 56" bow. Sinew backing necessary. The post is 3.5" wide but there are knots that run from the front at an angle toward and running off the edge. (If you can visualize that. I can get more pics if you like).

I'm sure this pic is too big. I'm trying to resize. I haven't had to do this in so long I forget how.

It looks to have a layer of sapwood on 2 of the edges ? If possible you want some sapwood on the back, even with sinew.

It sure would make some pretty veneers. I don't know about a self bow, even with sinew. That's a lot of knots.

Slap a hickory back on it and give it a whirl.

Sinew is the best for ERC,but I wouldn't risk a possibility of wasting lots of time sinewing on a questionable piece. I only use sinew on primo pieces of wood. You could try a hickory backing, but those are some serious looking violates knots. Does it look better from the other side? And how thick is it? Your pic only shows the inside of the tree close to the heartwood, and it might be cleaner on the other side closer to where the outside of the tree was. It might just be better for veneers in glass, but I'm not a glass guy.

Sorry I was thinking, but didn't say, that I thought of this as the belly of the bow. I will post a pic of the other side of the post which would be the back.

It is 3.5" square so after I cut it to about 3/4" thick it may eliminate alot of the knots.

Bona, knots in ERC staves can be deadly and especially on the back(belly not so bad). With a solid backing(hickory, maple or elm) you will have a good chance of success. I have not tried sinew backing on ERC yet but I have had sucess with hickory.
