Title: Does this riser NEED reinforcement?
Post by: Zradix on October 26, 2012, 04:21:00 PM
Hi

I'm tossing around the idea of making a takedown with a similar riser to the "wassaw" by Apex Predator Bows shown below.

The bow will be around 45-50# (I hope).

If I make the riser from actionwood, do I need to reinforce it with some type of fiberglass or other material?

Or will it be strong enough by itself?

Also, when making a takedown, do you have to put some type of glass or phenolic on the riser for a limb pad?

I'm trying to figure out the least expensive and easiest way I can to build a 3 pc.
At least until I get the process and my skill level up to where I feel comfortable trying more expensive and more difficult designs.

Thank you in advance for your input.

As bulky as that riser is it should not need any reinforcment maybe a little re-design.

Thanks James.

I do plan on making it a bit different from the one in the pics...but pretty similar.

Honestly, my thought was putting a strip of glass or phenolic in the riser might actually weaken it a bit.

At least when it's left whole the glue from the plywood will be going back to belly.

if a put a strip in, all the force from the limb fasteners will just go to the glue joint going through the riser.

Looking at the riser pictured it is not of good design IF the limbs bolt inserts are not long enough to make it into the center section of the riser. The belly side lamination glue joint could fail and split down to the grip.

ok,
That was in line with my fears.

So in this case I'd be better off just leaving the actionwood as one solid piece.

I don't have the tools to make a nice flowing reinforcement strip that will get to all the important areas.

Thank you

the bow looks pretty long, what is the reason to push the grip that far forward?

I've had failures with just action wood.
I'll never trust another without some fiberglass or something to strengthen it.
