Title: Finished new red oak bow
Post by: Jomohr84 on August 05, 2012, 11:23:00 AM
Howdy all,

Just finished a new red oak board bow which I plan to hunt with this year. It is 50# @ 28", 67" ntn, 68" ttt, 2" set immediately after unstringing, settling into 1 1/4" set at rest. Bubinga tip overlays, and a toasted belly. Finished with teak oil under poly. About 300 shots through it so far, and shoots real nice. Seems decently quick for a board bow, wanna chrony it when I get a chance, I made my tips a little narrower than usual. I don't go knife tip like some, but just slightly wider than a pencil. 6" brace height.

Nice, is that a brand or a marker?

Backing is canvas, maybe a little heavy, but its what I have on hand and has worked well in the past.  Ralph if you are referring to the symbol on the top fade, it is an ogham symbol, which is the ancient Celtic alphabet. They assigned symbols to letters and trees. That is the  symbol  for oak, and the letter D. It is put on with a sharpie.

Very nice...that's all I can take...I've just got to try a board bow...Tomorrows trip into town will include a trip to the lumber yard.

Thanks...did you use a tillering gizmo? Looks like one would work well...your tiller is awesome.

Yeah I used two gizmos, a 6" gizmo until I get it fully braced, then a 4" gizmo to final tiller.

Great looking bow, nice tips, backing and tiller. What profile dimensions did you use, width, taper etc and how thick did it end up.

I followed Sam Harpers build along. 1 1/2in wide, and starting 15" from each tip, taper to 1/2" at the tips, and straight thickness taper from 3/4" at the fades to 3/8" at the tips, then rounded the belly corner edges off.

From there, its all in the tillering. I went slow and gizmo'd the heck outta it. Took lots of pics and drew ovals and straight lines to compare where the limb tips were while bow was drawn on the tillering tree. Also checked often to make sure I was scraping evenly, to avoid any limb twist.
Have around 3000 shots through it now, and just one chrysal showed up on the upper limb. Bow has a bit of hand shock, but is pretty fast, I keep the brace low, around 6". I am ready to try some  woods other than oak, next bow is gonna be hickory backed bubinga, which I am excited to try.
