Title: Building a longer recurve #2
Post by: wookiewebster on July 23, 2012, 06:29:00 PM
A few months back I worked on building a longer version of Bingham's 60" recurve design and I posted about it  on this forum. (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=007825;p=1) .

So, I decided to try another one, with a slightly smaller stack height and some different exotic woods (Kingwood & Bubinga).  Here are the finished pictures that show the results of this build.

KennyM got me some really wild bubinga lams that look great on the limbs.

Here are the stats for this bow:
- target stats: 65", 46# @28", 2" wide limbs
- achieved stats: 65", 50# @28", (55# @30"), 203 fps with a 378gr arrow
- .040"  ULS black glass for the back
- .043"  ULS clear glass for the belly
- .070"  Bubinga parallel lam for back
- .090"  Bubinga tapered lams for belly (taper: .001/1") (visible thru glass)
- total stack height: .243"
- limb core wood: Bubinga
- riser: 2 x 3 x 26" Kingwood with Bubinga i-beam

I still don't have the stack exactly where I want it to get a 45# pull, so I will have to try again with my next build.  The bow shoots very smoothly and is quite accurate.  I really like the draw and overall feel of this bow.

Working with these very hard woods was an interesting experience.  I sometimes felt like I was working with a rock more than wood and it's very hard on tools. However, it has very nice grain and figure.

There are more pictures and info about this bow    on my BLOG. (http://wookieswords.blogspot.com/2012/07/recurve-build-4-65-i-beam.html)

I bet that bow is very enjoyable to shoot being as long as it is and the nice mass weight on the riser.  The kingwood and bubinga look very nice together also.

Nice job!! I wonder how it would act with a .002 taper in it?  I think Binghams uses .002 in about everything but the pronounced TD LB.

Just thinkin out loud.. LOL

Hey Kenny.  I was going back thru all my materials and I can't find where I got the idea of .001 taper.  I bet that could be one of the reasons why the pull weight is more than I expected. I will change that on the next build.

Thanks!

Love that old school riser look - I'll bet it is a dead in the hand shooter!
