Title: Alder for arrows?
Post by: ALW on June 17, 2012, 09:07:00 AM
Might be in the wrong forum.  If it is I'm sorry.  Has anyone used alder for arrows?  I cut a few pieces a couple of weeks ago and they are really straight.  I've scraped the bark off and they are in my drying box.  Just wondering about them because I can get a bunch of it.  Thanks.

There are many natural shoots that will make good arrows. Give the alder a try and let us know. I'm always looking for other shafting materials and have lots of tag alder here.

Thanks Pat.  That's the same thing Art B told me!  LOL....  I told him I would get a big bundle of it and bring it down to him to try out.  He make some dandy arrows and I'm just getting into shoot arrows.  I'll let you know how they work.

I'll tell him.  I'm hoping to make it down to his house soon for some bow and arrow "learnin"!  LOL....  Art does make some fine arrows as well as bows.  I've learned a ton from him.

ALDER makes good arrows we do'nt have it local here in the eastern pandle of WV. but I've trade for some a couple years ago.
Season them before you debark. That way you avoled checking cracks.
What COUNTY you in. Must BE SOUTHERN IF YOU HAVE ALDER.

Roy, I live down in Charleston but travel all over the state for work.  I cut these up around Davis along 93.  They grow along the top of the mountain in and along all the swampy areas up there.  I hope I'm calling them alders correctly.  One of my co-workers told me that's what they are.  If they aren't alder they are sure straight and a lot of them!  We'll see how they do.

Can you take a pic of the plant (tree) and post it here?

Next time I'm up in that part of the state I'll take some photos and post them.  We have a big road project going on in that area so I will probably be back out there before long trouble shooting.  I'll try and cut another big bundle as well.
