We brag on our successes, and rightfully so, in what we are able to accomplish as bow makers. Sometimes, it doesn't go quite the way we figured...64" kiln dried black cherry, backed with a hickory slat. Pulled into 2" of Perry Reflex for glue up. Belly tillered well before glue up, about 20# at full draw. Add 10# for backing and 20# for "Perry"= 50# when finished, in theory. Nearing completion, even tiller on the tillering board with a long string. Sweet lookin'. and then BLAMM. Violent failure at around 24" draw length. Can't really tell from the break if it was the back or belly failing first. The glue joint showed no signs separating. The hickory slat ring orientation was a mess and I new this going in, but the break doesn't appear to be related from what I can see. Lots of swearing, then a good belly laugh.

Whoops! I had the riser accent in a one piece glass bow I built fail this week. Chechen to glass glue joint didn't take. Luckily I caught it before it blew. The other side of the accent is normal and the wood or glass fails before the glue joint. Same batch of glue, same glass, same wood. Musta missed prepping a surface or something. It shot great and was #1 in line for elk this year. Back to the shop!
It looks like your riser was still in a block form when it went. Also looks like it went right at the point where the fade would have ended if it were faded in. Maybe some stress at that point.
Not sure, just looks that way.
I see what your saying Monterey but, it looks like the grain on the backing was the culprit. It looks pooled and full of runoffs. I think it would have survived if the backing's grain was strait.

Yeah. I knew the backing wasn't ideal, and that is an understatement. I did think I could get a bow backing out of it though. When it broke, I said to myself, I shouldn't have used it, along with a few other choice words and phrases. Oddly it doesn't appear to have broken as a result of the grain running off. But, lesson learned.
If we didn't make mistakes once in a while we'd all be perfect. Happen to everyone .... Or at least that's what I tell myself when I blow one up.
