Title: Another newbie question.
Post by: whitetailhyper on April 30, 2012, 06:40:00 PM
I cut this Osage in Kansas while turkey hunting and need help determining whether it is worth making a bow out of it. I know it is a little short but seems to have a good early/late wood ratio. is there too many knots and too much twist? This is the straightest of the split pieces. I can always try again next spring when I go back. The rancher said I could have all I want!!

It's osage ain't it! d;^)  Of course it will make a bow. How long is it?  If not long enough you could split it and splice the 2 halves at the handle.  The knots can be worked caround and the twist can ber removed with heat or not. A little twist won't hurt anything in a wood bow.

Yeah theres a bow or two in there somewhere. Lots of knots in that stave but they can be worked around like Pat said. Doesnt look like it would be the easiest stave to get a bow from but ive seen and made very nice bows from much uglier staves than that one. Good luck with it.
