Title: ERC ELB Finished...Vid"s Added and a trubute to Grampa Newt
Post by: coaster500 on March 23, 2012, 06:26:00 PM
During this build I found a new respect for you ELB builders. The "D" shaped cross section and slight bend at the handle were very hard for me but this piece of ERC if there is such a thing was perfect so here it is.

It's 67 51@27...  I was going to use the horn from an antelope I took in the 70's but it had some issues that made me believe it wasn't trustworthy. In stead I use some Stag (Mule deer) for the tips and rest...  I wrapped the handle in braided hemp and put rawhide on the back. The back is finished (rawhide is pretty plain) with a coat of pecan stain and while still wet and application of dark espresso. The wet application caused the grain effect.

My daughter started getting interested in ancestry a while back and has traced our family back a long ways. A couple of years ago she gave me this Coat of Arms. It's supposed to be ours??? Anyway here's my version of an ELB with the Newton Coat of Arms

Really nice bow Kip, you're whippen them out fast. Your bows always seem to have very low set, great technique.

Well Kip, forgot the little lady's birthday, back on the 21st., and she's pretty much had me "steppin & fetchin" ever since. Gonna have to make a note not to do that again.     :help:

Yep, not only does she look good, she appears to shoot just fine. Ought to perform well in all positions.

Barry

True oil,,,  can't remember how many coats with some light sanding in between then Spar over that with some more sanding and steel wool to finish. I still can't believe how light this ERC is.

The neighbor came by this morning.... I tillered the bow to 29 inches for safety reasons (This ERC kind of freaks me out)... I am drawing it 27 or so...  Not the best but shoots real well  :)

A little side note...  My Grandfather Newton (everyone called him Newt) was a whittler...  He made almost all of his tools and I have a small collection of his carvings and I have a few of his tools. Since he died in the first year of my life these are 65  to 80 years old. This the first time I ever used his tools. I used his little gouges to inlay the  stag striker plate...anyway I thought it was kind of cool  :)

Some of Newt's stuff...

Kip, your Grandfather was quite a carver. It's nice being able to keep and use tools that were hand made and used by earlier generations of your family. I have a few tools made by my Grandfather and my Dad and I treasure them above most everything else I have.
Dave.
P.S. I really like your ERC longbow.

Tiller looks great.  Wish I lived close, I would come over and shoot it!

Newt was quite the carver - neat story.  Thanks for sharing.

Real nice. I know how you must feel. I have some of my Great Grandfathers tools that I use in my bow making.
Looks like Ole Newt had skills too!
