I have a high gloss finish on my bow, and would like to dull it to a matt finish.
Could I use 0000 steel wool? Certainly don't want to put deep grooves in the finish, just dullen it.
thanks
Yep you can steel wool it and it will tone it down. And then spray it with helmsman spar and put a matte finish on it as an outer coat.

Spraying with satin poly will cut the shine. I do this on all my bows after 5 or 6 coats of Tru-Oil.
Some finishes react to others, I sprayed auto clearcoat on some E. Ind. Rosewood to seal it , then put Helmsman over it to satin it.
Had to start over, the Helmsman softened the clearcoat and remained sticky. Not good!LOL
Steel wool will satin it easily, but will get shiny on the grip pretty quick.
True. I forgot about that Kenny. Thanks for the reminder.
Fine valve grinding compound will reduce gloss a little also. It has been used by many gunsmiths, and works really well on tru-oil finishes.
Just spread some on a soft rag (cotton t-shirt)and lightly rub back and forth. I normally use a denatured alcohol soaked rag for clean up.
