Title: Truoil not drying on Pau ferro?
Post by: typical2 on March 17, 2012, 09:57:00 AM
I put a coat of truoil on 2 bows.  It went well except over the Pau ferro riser and tip overlays.  There it is still sticky a day later.  Is this typical and is there something I can do?  Maybe seal with superglue?

You may have to seal the pau ferro first, Shellac should do the trick.

You will probably have to remove the truoil and seal the wood first. The oils in the rosewood probably won't let your finish dry.

You can probably clean off the sticky Tru-Oil with steel wool and mineral spirits.

I found tru oil slow to dry if it to thick, or follow up coats are put on to soon.

Shellac at Pat said or super glue. Good super glue spreads farther and goes farther than you think it would.

Put three coats min on the rosewood is my rule.  It dries in about 5 min. steel wool it and keep putting down coats until the pores are filled.  may take 5 or 6 coats.

Put on 4 light coats of shellac.  Seems to have worked.  Now...can I put Helmsman Spar Urethane over the shellac?

Shellac sticks to everything and everything sticks to shellac. Go for it!

this is a bow with pau fero riser and limb veneers.. I used "Bullseye shellac" in the spray can and sprayed 3 coats on whole bow then the next day I sprayed several coats of Spar Urethane over the Bullseye shellac, no problems with drying and eaiser than using super glue.   (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/pauferoriser-1.jpg)

I have been doing 3 coats of Bullseye shellac as well.  The first 2 I sand down and the last one I steel wool, then shoot with spar.  When you sand too far and some little spots of oily wood get exposed, they show up right away as never ending tacky spots in the final finish.

Ok anything that is lacquer based will seal your wood. It actualy thins the oils and they blend into the finsh and seals more oil from coming out. You can spray poly over a lacquer once it is cured. but not the other way around. The hot finish (lacquer) will melt the poly.

I agree with Crooked Stic, I've used Deft spray lacquer or something similar and then you can put your favorite finish over it if you want. Lacquer is great on any kind of oily wood.
