Hey Everybody, a friend of mine has access to a farm with a ton of hackberry and walnut. While discussing the logistics of the cutting and getting it out the Eastern Red Cedar came up-"it is just a weed around here, cut anything you want". I am waiting on the white wood but am wondering about the ERC. Several of the trees are tall, somewhat straight and clear of lower branches.
My Question is when to cut, how to store and how to seal. Do I remove the outer bark and seal the back?
Quarter it out? Leave it whole? I don't want to mess it up. Any help is welcome.
Thanks
Bill
I would be interested in this too. Any ERC experts out there?
Treat it like whitewood. Cut it, split it, peel the bark and seal the ends and back. Ive only cut it in the summer and the bark peels right off. Its very brittle in tension, rawhide backing is a good idea.
I prefer to cut it in the winter when the sap is down and its not so sappy. And i leave the bark on. It doesnt matter cus any bow i make with it gets backed. I wood highly recomend kerf cutting it to start your splits, cus its a soft wood and easily dinged with wedges and sledges. ERC needs to be babied every step of the way.
