Title: would like some opinions please
Post by: soaring eagle on March 11, 2012, 05:27:00 PM
I have a riser blank glued up with walnut and a tulip wood stripe. I am thinking some of kennym's red cedar under clear glass might look good. Any other ideas would be appreciated. here is a picture of the riser  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/bowbuild021.jpg)      Here is a link to another build I am finishing up just looking for something nicer than the black glass  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=007936

Red cedar looks great under clear glass- not a bad choice with your riser there.

ERC would look good but I would go with Tulip veneers my self to compliment the tulip wood in the riser.    Just my 2 Cents

Really cool would be tulip/knarly walnut spliced veneers.  :D

Red cedar looks cool.  I've only built one bow with it and I used it for about 1/3 of my stack instead of just thin veneers.  Weight came out light and its loud.  2 other bows without red cedar from the same form, tillered as close to the same as I can get them, are quiet.

Can't say for sure its the ERC, but I'll just use thin veneers next time.

Will the ERC veneers loose color and turn brown after time? What can be done to stop this?

I think I like kennym's idea. However I don't have the ability to grind laminations. I wonder who I could get to do that.

I think Kenny's idea would look really nice with that riser also.

Hoping to pick up some tulip wood locally. Kenny if I splice these limbs how thick would you need them to saw and grind 4 lams .030 thick

The way I do it is add.100 to each lam you want.

.035 for sanding saw marks out and .065 for the bandsaw cut

So .130 x 4 = .520 , but I like to have plenty in case you run into a booger inside the blank....

So I would go minimum of 5/8" thick.

One other tip which I'm sure you know, is make the pcs a little extra width when gluing the 2 woods together, so you can straighten if they come out with a little bow or sumpin!

Haven't spliced any before but intended to leave everything heavy just in case. Easier to take it off than put it on. I may have found some tulip today but not sure when I can go check it out. I saw you have some pics of some very nice looking walnut. If you have some that's really figured I may just get it from you.
