Title: lop-sided hackberry stave
Post by: gringol on March 11, 2012, 01:45:00 PM
I've been working with a shortish piece of hackberry and I need a little help.  One end of the stave is beautifully straight with a bit of reflex.  The other has a little character; a nice hump and a knot.  Due to the extra wood left around the knot, that end of the bow is heavier than the other.  Does this matter? It's floor tillered, but isn't quite tillered to brace height.  Here are some pics.

Here are some close ups of the goofy area.

Any suggestions?

Get it to low brace and see how the string tracks. You may not have to do any adjustments.

I've tillered to low brace, but I could use an expert's eye to make sure this is right before I go farther.  The strings tracks ok.  It isn't perfect, but I think it'll do.

Any thoughts? (the knots are in the right limb)

The right limb is bending about 1/4 way out from the fadebut stiffens after that. The left limb is about the same but not as much bend.
