Title: Static tips
Post by: coachA on February 14, 2012, 10:41:00 AM
I have always wanted to build my own recurve bow. I have always like static limbed recurves. I have done some reserch and I cant find anything that descibes how to make them.I can find blueprints ofr working limbs but that not what i want to make. My question is this, What is the easiest or best way to make static limbs? I know there is a lot of bowyers out there that dont want to give up there secret but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Im assume you are talking about FG lam bows. A tip wedge would work to make the tips static.

I am talking about FG lam bows. I have looked at the bingham project blueprints. Their blueprints seem to me to be for working limbs.

Ryan , Taper a piece of glass .030 that is 5 inches long back about 2 inches to a feathered taper and add it into the center of the stack on the tip. It will give you a static tip if you do the same with a wood taper a bit longer, 6 inches on the belly glass. I like the wood taper anyway to cut my string grooves in. You have one of my Talons. The static is created in that limb by the degree of the curve and the above additions.
God bless and good luck, Steve

Ryan, there is no secret to static tips, just make them stiff enough so they don't "uncoil" when the bow is drawn, I will attach a picture on how I did mine(just like Sixby said is excactly what I did)   :bigsmyl:

The dark strip in the closeup of the tip is a piece of .050 Brown glass tapered to nothing.
Worked great on one of our "AB" Mooses

Thanks a lot Sixby!!! I may be picking your brain in the future. I have always wanted to make a bow. It's not like i need it but I think I would really enjoy it.
