Title: missed weight
Post by: Pete W on February 10, 2012, 10:12:00 AM
I just came in with a finished weight a couple pounds lighter than I wanted. How much weight can I gain by shortening the tips 1/2" on a 65" piramid design HHB bow that is 48@28 now?
Because the limbs taper the whole limb will need to also be taken down on the sides as well as the tips. Will taking down the sides just cancel out shortening the length?

The limbs are equal length now , can I work the lower limb only?

I hate finding the weight is low  after the finish is on.

Pete, what wood are you using? You can add a few pounds by tempering the belly and/or flipping the tips a bit.
If you shorten the tips you don't have to remove much side wood to even out the profile. I doubt you'd loose too much by doing it.

when i have piked a bow, i have usually just retapered the last 8 - 10" or so, that kept the wood in the limbs, but reduced the tip weight.
but what pat says is true- there is not very much wood to remove anyway.
but, again(!!!) as pat says , flipping the tips works really well, and it also adds another whole aesthetic dimension to the bow.

Pete, if the bow is for me just send it light ;-)
What's a couple pounds anyways?

I think I have a plan .
Keep it for me  and build another one.I realy like how this bow shoots, and don't want to mess it up. If it didn't already have a finish on it  I would be more inclined to tinker, but the more I think about it the more I fear getting into trouble  and ruining a good bow.

Do we really need excuses to build another one? I know I sure don't LOL

Just don't tell my wife I said that cause if I keep coming up with excuses to build another then she lets me slide.

Ahhh! Who am I kidding she knows me better than that LOL

I like missing weight sometimes then I get to keep them around the shop longer.   I like to shoot them and look at them and hunt with them and shoot them some more.  Well you get the point.

Too bad you came in light.  Dang the luck you get to build another one.
