Title: bow build
Post by: soaring eagle on February 08, 2012, 08:06:00 PM
It has been a few years since I have built any bows due to a career change and time constraints blah blah blah. So lets see if I can still do this. This one will be grey action wood limbs with grey action wood and bubinga riser and shooting for 52 - 56# it will be 62" hybrid longbow. I got started on the riser today

I got a little more done today. Fade outs sawed and ground. I didnt get my fixture set right on new saw so stripe is little off center but it will work.  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/IMG-20120212-00011.jpg)  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/IMG-20120212-00008.jpg)  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/IMG-20120212-00006.jpg)  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/IMG-20120212-00005.jpg)

well here it is out of the oven. I thought all went well but actually had belly glass slide to one end so bow will be a little shorter than intended. I expected something like this to happen since it has been a while since made any. but it will still be a nice bow just happy its not scrap yet. will have more pics tomorrow.  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/IMG-20120215-00013.jpg)

Some tips as to how people keep lams from sliding would be awesome......... I am getting ready to attempt my first glass bow myself.

Looking great!

Nice riser. Do you have any shots of your bandsaw swing jig setup?

trentcur this is how i keep lams from sliding sideways. Once lams are on form i put the plates all the way then once I get some tape on them i adjaust plates to where they are even with top of lams so they dont hurt my hose. The slip I had on this one was just me being out of practice. I moved riser from end to end and slid a lam length wise. (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/005.jpg)

here are a couple pics of swing fixtures. The base is keyed so it repeats when going on saw.  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/002.jpg)  (http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa453/abraham743/001-1.jpg)

OOPS!!!!! well this one ended up scrap. I have built 34 bows to date this is only the fourth one I have lost. I messed up from the start and for some reason ordered .050 glass instead of .040 so it came out heavy it was 65@28". If everything else would have been ok I probably would have sold it. But with handle stripe being off center I decided it was time to experiment with reducing weight. I got it down to 56# at which point I lost my strung limb profile(tip became weak). So lesson learned was if I need to reduce that amount that amount of weight some glass will have to be removed from back and belly.

upside is I have band saw issues resolved and am cutting radius and maintaining center line, already have more material ordered and tulip wood and walnut cut for riser. Thanks for the compliments and kind words. will start a new thread soon!
