Title: Handle profile for board bow?
Post by: psychmonky on January 20, 2012, 05:29:00 PM
Ok guys, im building my first board bow and I need to know about handles/shelves. I don't want to go anywhere near center with it, but I do want to cut the rest in rather than shoot off of my hand.

If you guys could post pics of your board bows' rest/handle sections I'd appreciate it...especially pics looking straight at the back of the bow.

Thanks

Scott

Depends a little on what your making it from . . . red oak, hickory, etc.   Here's one i did with hickory:

handle's a little blocky, if i did it again i'd finesse it quite a bit more.  Bout 1/4" off center.

I'm sure some better ones will be along:)

Sorry forgot to mention that...its red oak with another 10" piece of red oak glued on as a riser/handle. Bow is 62" nock to nock and is backed with 3 layers of fiberglass drywall tape. Im aiming for 45-50@my 27" draw.

Thanks again.

You can glue on build up leather, wood, antler to make a rest, or a floppy style rest.

I know I CAN glue a rest on, but id rather cut one in....I am really just looking for examples of cut in rests. Thanks for the input though.

shape it to how you want it, file fit, file fit.

Thanks Vanillabear. Out of curiosity, what kind of wood/finish/backing is that?

Mine is cut to center and I have had no issues what so ever. I have a linen backing with a glued on riser made from 1/4" thick lam of darker red oak glued to another piece of 3/4" red oak and shaped as shown. It came in a little lighter in draw weight than expected but I am somewhat new to the process and had to remove more than I wanted to get an appropriate tiller. Turned out to be a great shooter.
