I received a hickory stave from a friend last summer and wasnt sure where to start without screwing it up. Well, good news, Im heading to Roy from Pa's shop in the morning for some hands on. I got the stave from Dale Hajas and according to Roy he did me a great favor by roughing out the way he did. I have to thank both of these guys in advance. My grandson turns 1 year old in April and Dale also sent me a stave for him. Hopefully after my tutoring I can finish his first bow in time for his birthday. Nothing like starting them out on the right foot with a bow from Grandpap and his friends.
a day with roy... you lucky dog. make sure to get some pics. good luck with bow build
Roy's da man! Or at least I think he is, anyways, I wish you luck....Art
See ya in the morning Kev. It's been a long time since I seen a hickory stave explode on the tree. Really looken forward to it... LMAO
:deadhorse:
We have faith in you, Roy. Just be sure to wear safety glasses. :bigsmyl:
Oh, if ya all only knew what Kevin pulled on me today with phone text. I owe him big time now:) LOL, he got me good..................
Have fun sounds like a good time.
Just came in to feed the dog. Kevin had a major/minor slip up with the band saw.. But we got around that, and Kev is now rasping in the facets. Ken started with a full Osage stave and it's about ready for the tree. Joe has his first ever BBO to 16 inches on the tree with a full brace height of 6 inches. Things are looking good and we are having a great time. Beer, pizza, osage and hickory chips are flying.. And so is the bullship:) Doesn't get any better in January...
Going back out to the bow shop....
Man that sounds like fun. Wish I had some bow builders closer to me so I could share the fun. May have to take a trip somewhere.
Here are some pics from yesterday. My hickory bow with curly maple handle (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa391/bowkevin1/bowshp3-1.jpg)At the tree (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa391/bowkevin1/bowshop4-1.jpg)The master at work (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa391/bowkevin1/bowshop2.jpg)Ken working on his osage bow (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa391/bowkevin1/bowshop1.jpg)
A nice shop always gets better when you fill it with good people! Looks like some good fun there!
The master at work?????? I guess my eye glass script is expired? I cant see one anywhere?
Here is one of his finished bows. Osage backed with bamboo with a curly maple handle. He's the master in my book. (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa391/bowkevin1/bowfinished.jpg)
I know just who that joker is Kevin. I was just hoping the old fart would pop in and fight back a little. Its probably too late for Roybert. I can see the tip of one of my bows in your bottom pic.
I'm here Pearly boy.

Kevin was a little under the weather in the morning, so I got a glass of home made wine in him and a beer and his heart started to beat again:)

Man Roy, looks like you worked those boys pretty hard. If that home made wine is sweet enough you could send some on to Nate.
Any pics of finished or near finished bow from this shindig
Well we lost the BBO, it blew apart. The Osage selfbow will be on the tree on Ken's next visit and Kevin's Hickory should get on the tree next time also. That is if we keep Kevin away from the Bandsaw, he tried to make a takedown on his first bow:) Hence the curly maple handle was added...
I'd be afraid to send Kate any home made wine, who knows what she would do:)
Heading back to Roy's this weekend and hopefully if I dont screw up, I can get my bow on the tree. I'll be sure to post some more pics.
I would love to partake in some of that there homemade hooch. You guys have got to try some of the chokecherry and plum wine the Hutterites make out here in Montana...gonna have to see if I can get my hands on some.
Sure wish I could get out and build some bows but brrrrrrr brother it is COLD right now in the unheated shop.
