Title: Kick in the right direction
Post by: al-Sadiq on October 19, 2011, 03:12:00 AM
Hi Guys and Gals.  I am compleatly new to bow making. I have look at some sites and bought the first of the bowers bibles(getting the others soon). I am working on my first one right now. it will be a bord bow and my wife and son are also making thier own. What I want to know is where I can find information on all wood recurves or even arabic style bows. Any kick in that direction would help with research before I start braking wood to make one.  Thanks in advance.

I just started building Horsebows and I just had jump right in to it I couldn't find the wealth of knowledge on them like other bows. as for all wood recurves the bowyers bible collection will cover making static recurves and bending wood to make recurves great books.

I would suggest you learn proper tillering on a few bows before you tackle a recurve. The tillering is the same process but there is way more stress on a recurve and it takes more skill to tiller a recurve.
TBBII has an excellent chapter on bending wood and one on recurves.
For Asiatic horn composite bows Adam Karpowicz's book "Ottoman Turkish Bows, manufacture and design" is the holy grail for these types of bows whether they be Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or any other of this type bow. The construction methods are similar enough that this book will put you right on track to build one.

Well shoot. Looks like I got to start over on the board build. It broke along a growth ring and broke a limb. HAHA but that is part of the fun.  Also thanks for the info on the books and stuff.
