Just found one and would like to make it look original.
It depends on the type of stone ax it is. Is it a knapped head or pecked and ground?
it deffinetly not knapped so pecked and ground.
Probably a more authentic way of doing it but here is one I did years back. I used wet rawhide. When it dries it shrinks tight.

The dogwood handle was from a tree my Dad planted years ago. The hafting job isn't to good but it does hold well. I gave it to my friends boy and he promised not to use it as the head was a real artifact.
