Now that my big game season is over all I can think about is making shavings. Last year I did'nt cut enough good wood to work with so this year I want to start wright away. Are there any woods that are better to cut before the sap gose down in the fall?
I cut some hickory yesterday, the bark was on tight as can be, not loose like in the spring so I don't recommend you cut it in the fall.
I cut osage any time I can, time of year seems to make no difference at all.
You can cut any wood any time! For woods that you normally remove the sapwood I prefer to cut it during the fall or winter months. Mostly for comfort reasons. I prefer to cut whitewoods during the growing season so I can peel off the bark to reveal the back.I like to cut whitewood shortly after the leaves come out. The ring under the bark was laid down last season and it has had all winter to mature.
Yes it is so nice to be able to peel the bark off......
You can cut osage, black locust and mulberry now since the bark and sapwood need to be removed to get a heartwood back. If you can find a nice straight relatively knot free whitewood sapling like oak, hickory, maple, etc cut it and remove the bark with a scraper like tool. The bark on whitewood saplings is pretty thin. Jawge

Thanks everyone. I plan on cutting a bunch of juniper it is the most plentiful around here. I have heard of some osage and have some pecan on the inlaws farm south of me that I'm going after this winter. Other than that there is not much to hunt for. I have tried finding good chokecherry, scrub oak, maple but have struggled so far.
Remember pecan is a hickory so get as much as you can.
so wouldn't the pecan be better cut in the spring.
but i geuss cutting in the fall is better than not cutting at all.
have fun!
