once again a fellow trad gang member has looked out for me and hooked me up with some nice hickory and my first ever red elm log. ive already split all the hickory today , removed the bark to the cambium and sealed the backs and ends with shellac batman said that the red elm was a bear to split. i havent tackled it yet cause i wore myself out prepping the hickory. here is a pic (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/DSC00485.jpg)batman had also called me a littl;e while ago and told me about some more hickory he knew of thats on the ground from irene. im game to go get it. that will happen in a few days. rv
Red elm is some very tough wood....makes a very nice bow.
The Hickory looks good, Ruddy. Nice haul.
Ruddy, are you(or Don) sure that is red elm? Red elm has a furrowed bark like the other elms as far as I know. See if you can get some leaves and twigs from the tree to help ID it.
now im not so sure, im checkin into it.
Looks kinda like white ash bark to me? The elm's we have up here have scaley, layered bark with a dark brown heartwood.
Not trying to be a rude or disrespectful. But I do not see any Red Elm in the pic..
Looks like bitternut hick and white ash? Rudy we need leaves man!
i went and looked up red elm, no this is not it! im not sure what it is but im still researching the subject. i have another educated mind looking into it for me also, who happens to be a sponsor here at tg. the man is a genius when it comes to tree identification. rv
I was going to suggest you have "that man" take a look at the pic, buddy - LOL
how about beech?
Could easily be beech with that smooth bark.
I'm almost 100 percent sure it's beech. we have alot of them around. I do know that this wood is not easy to split but will make a good bow. I'm not sure we have any red elm around here. Do see slippery elm occasionally.
hey don, thanks for clearing it up. i'll be splitting the beech log today. i just have to get more shellac. i ran out yesterday. apparently i had less of it than i originally thought. im certainly lookin foward to working with both woods. rv
