I rasp the shelf in to where the arrows I want to use bare shaft well, but of course you can only go in so far.

I don't ever measure.  I just keep going until it looks right.  I kind of dish the area out and make the shelf out of leather.

Try some stacked leather rather than cutting a shelf in. I think you will like it more and its easier to do...........and change down the road if need be. You cant move a shelf up and down the riser like a glued on leather rest can.

I measure out from the centerline 1/4" and saw to that point.  Then rasp away the wood to the cut line.  Radius the shelf and the riser portion to try and get the high point at the same spot on both.  Then start shooting.  I haven't made many bows but haven't broke one yet.  Just leave plenty of wood in the handle so you can cut the shelf in and shape the handle the way you want it.

If I cut a shelf in heres what they usually look like. I dont ususally cut it all the way to center. And yes I know this ones on the wrong side but it wasnt for me.

I use a rasp and file....this shelf worked really well and it was cut in about an 1/8" and used stacked leather glued.
