I participated in the 2010 bow trade but sat out this season, but watched the thread closely. My question to you guys who have been in it and to those who have watched. What "rules" would you instate or changes would you do to the trade.
I would change that they can not ship bows early, I would say in ONLY the last week can bows be shipped. This way everybody could watch every bow get made and not know which will show up at there door.
This would also help with the rule that Kelly has already made, with new bowyers and shipping their bows. This would allow Kelly to see who all has made their bow and who hasn't, and he could possible even flex that date depending on the number of complete bows or lack there of.
Whats your thoughts,
Boswell
This is Stiks show, any rules give to him. He is very open to knew Ideals, but I know he does not want to complicate it with rules. But a thread like this might make it easier to brainstorm on them.
I like the idea of not shipping till a certain date. That would definitely add to the suspense. :)
I was going to get in the next trade.... I noticed you stated something about new bowyer rules. Can some point me in the direction of were the rules are listed or inform the people who do not know the rules what they are?
Thanks- Jerrod
Jerrod,
there are few rules but and they will get posted on the sign up tread about DEC it really depends on when stiks decides to do it. Here is what it looked liked for this year.

Hope this helps
Thanks Kelly.... Sure helps alot, cant wait till next trade
Thanks agian, and be safe over there.....
I'd like to get in on the trade for 2012. Could someone let me know when the sign up begins?
I'm new to TG but trying to get more regular. Maybe after elk season I can get started on my trade bow! Already have an idea or two I've been wanting to try.
God bless,
K.C.
KC, the new bow trade probably won't start until after the new year, after hunting season is over.
If you decide to join maybe you should wait until a recipient has been chosen for you before you decide what to do. That way you can make the bow just for your recipient.
KC, I agree with Pat. You want to wait a little so you can at least know what weight and draw your shooting for.
Boswell, you and AKmud have a good point. A shipping date would add suspense to the trade. Speculating on which bow was going to who was almost as exciting as receiving the bow.
I'm with the guys that think a shipping date is a good idea. Only bad thing about that is that the pics would really be flying on the swap thread for about a week. Maybe overload for guys with dial-up internet but sounds very interesting.
i agree with the idas on shippin the most all at once but like iv said befor it d be wise to start earlier for some of the guys who work as many hrs as i do sticks commeted the same idea another idea i see some have complained that abegiiner s bow isnt fair trade to a seasond vetern i had a thouth why not list in areas of experince ie say beginner to beginner seasond pro to seasond pro again guys just a thought id relley just like to see a extras few months tacked to the whole thing just my 2 cents cant wait for th next trade brock
Brock, its already been 8 months - this thing started in late December 2010, any longer and it would be the 2013 bow trade!
I like the idea of having two categories of participant - one for experienced and one for those starting out. How about 10 hunting weight bows completed as a line between?
shaun what im sayin i understnad what u mean but i mean like startin in feburay and havin say a oct delivry date my reason is jobs like u n me have were workin our tail off in the spring and fall usally know what i mean? and those catorys i fully aree with say a 10 bows group and the beginners group and another for guys 50 + brock
We already do a split between wood and glass bows. Some guys or gals just won't shoot one or the other.
As far as beginner to experienced split, it would put alot of work on me and Kelly. I do take some preferences into consideration when it comes to drawing names so anyone with concerns can contact me through pm at sign up time.
I do try try and keep any rules to a minimum but they are necessary to keep things in order.
The one and only thing I try to prevent is someone not shipping a bow to their recipient and as few being late as possible. I was late shipping this year but they say if you ain't breaking you making. Matter of fact I talked to my recipient on the phone about some building issues I have been having and ended up shipping a bow that I didn't build. He's happy and I didn't want to keep him waiting any longer so I did what I had to.
I have had some great suggestions on a few changes and am open any and all suggestions, but in reality we know everyone won't be happy all the time. There will be one major change that was suggested to me through a PM when the new sign ups start and it will be to prevent any one from getting a bow that will not return a bow.
Any suggestions post'em here.
Stiks.
P.S Thanks for posting this thread Boswell
I don't like the idea of seperating the newbies from the seasoned bowyers. One of the main purposes of these trades,IMO, is to give the newbies the encouragement to join in and the opportunity to build a bow for someone else. That alone will give them the encouragement and drive to build a bow. I've been building wood bows for over 25 years and have no problem sending one of my bow to anyone and have no problem recieving a bow from anybody, newbie or seasoned bowyer!
Who will determine who qualifies to be a seasoned bowyer and who is a newbie anyway. Personally I am tired of all the segregation we already have in our normal lives as it is. I will have to opt out if that is one of the considerations with this trade.
I tend to agree with Pat. Imagine how excited a new bowyer would be (or any of us for that matter) to recieve a bow from say...PatB.! If we take the new bowyers out of that possibility it would be less fun for me anyway.
Alot of what this swap is about is to encourage and help other bowyers, not just getting a bow. Heck, if it was just about having a bow, we could make it ourselves! You could say some day, "This is one of Fish's first bows!", (to pull a name out of the air), "and look where he is now!".
I like the idea of having a shipping date set that sends them all out basicly at the same time though. Even though I've been one who has been late both times, I think that will change with the next swap.
Just my thoughts,

I agree stiks. And I agree with Pat also. This trade is about fun and making bows for others.
Just think of the asset it is for the younger bowyers, one to send a bow to a seasoned bowyer. Who knows what they are looking at. The feed back they can give to help make them better. Also the new bowyer who receives a bow from a seasoned bowyer. They get to see what right looks like.
I remember this topic comming up when the stiks did this the first year and I think that, that swap and this one proves it would be really hard to turn away any of the bows sent. I only hope I can produce a bow half the quality of any of the bows I have seen. I have not shot any of them but I bet most shoot well.
I hope that all return next year, I will be there helping stiks if he lets me. Plus I will get to try my hand at building a bow. Hickory or osage I think I have been runing some ideals thru my head.
I cant wait for OCT to get here I will be home then. Then the next mile stone will be the start of the sign up of the next swap. :)
Happy building and hunting,
Kelly
Kelly, we'll all celebrate when you get home!!!
thanks Pat.
Yes we will!!!
Kelly, Your a fixture in this thing bud :D
Pat, There will definetley not be any segregation of sorts. I think the new guys and the veterans alike are building some quality bows that are coming through the swap. It really pushes guys to raise the bar.
The only separation I did both years was from wood and glass because some guys just won't shoot one or the other and I never really had an issue with that from the beginning.
The main thing that will change next year is anyone that is a new sign up or shipped late (this includes myself) will have their bow put on hold until they ship. This was suggested by another member here that was in the swap and I really think this is the best solution to prevent some one from getting a bow and not sending a bow. As far as a specific ship date for the rest If the majority agree to that I wouldn't see anything wrong with like a three week window for the shipping of bows to take place but some may want to ship so they can be done with it.
Kinda got to leave a window for some that may be out of town or what ever.
I try to keep everyone happy with the swap and keep everything fair. I guess if some one thinks something is not fair they can just not get in.
I myself hope everyone get's back in and the spirit of the swap remains the same. Like has been said it's not about getting it's about giving and passing on a part of yourself here on the bench. Sometime circumstances come up in life and things happen but I think all in all everyone go's above and beyond to make it a great event.
ok sticks sounds good got a ? for ya what kind a time frame we lookin at for next year i.e sign up dates expected delivarly dates brock
I think next year the only other question I would ask, would be who is going to one of the big trad gatherings, I mean heck if I had that and builder was going and the receiver was going he could save some postage and see the reaction on the face of the receiver as he handed him a bow.
That is just my thought. I don't know all of the big ones but it would not be hard to add them, or any of the shows that 2 of you might be at. Just a thought on that.
Kelly
Stiks,
You and Kelly did a great job on this trade. Coordinating 80+ builders is not an easy job! As pretty much a "newbie" at building (I've only built about 15-18 shooters), I have to say the bow I received was considerably better quality than what I was able to build. Some of that is a product of materials to some point I guess tho (glass vs. all wood). But it has lit a fire in me to give glass a try soon.
For the next trade, I may be receiving a bow that is lower quality than what I make, but that is part it and if everyone goes in to the trade knowing that, no one should be disappointed.
I was in a trade on another site a couple years ago and we had one guy who whipped out a very basic bow (read - very little effort put into it...) and then griped incessantly while waiting for "his" bow to arrive. He even had the gall to criticize the bow he received. It has been so refreshing to see everyone's attitude and words of encouragement to everyone involved in this trade, definitely a top shelf crew of folks.
Thanks again!
Akmud, that is exactly why I don't visit the other trad sites. This one and these folks are the best.
I don't like the idea of segregation either. I consider myself seasoned and have many bows of my own making. Truth is,,, I'll still be hunting with PatB's bow I got last year in the swap. It is an awsome bow I'll treasure for life.
The bow I received this year was really nice too and is in reserve for righties in my family to shoot.
Two bows from different levels of experience; both charished additions to my collection.
My decission of course, the only draw back I see to this trade is I am not hunting with a bow I made which is why I got into selfbows anyway.
Joe that is a problem, hmmm I think splitting the time. Take the new one one day and the old one the next. I am just hoping I can finish up mine when I get back and get it into the woods. I will be doing my first trad season this year anyway and my viper that I got off Jeremy will hit the woods a few times, Then once I get mine built it may sit for a few days.
My suggestion about tiers came from the fact that I have not received a bow or had the bow forwarded that was received by my builder. Motivation for this idea is at least partially sour grapes and personal disappointment - not well played on my part and I apologize. I have been in contact with my builder and believe a bow will eventually be sent.
I agree with Pat that part of the reason for this trade is to encourage beginners. I don't believe this is the part of this forum for building your first bow ever. You should make your first bow - there is plenty of advice and encouragement on this forum - and keep it.
I probably wouldn't send my first bow ever to someone in a trade like this. (I gave it to a friend as a wall hanger). And I see your point Shaun. But I wouldn't want to segregate or turn anyone down either.
We do have to be careful of those that are so new to the site that we don't fully know thier character.
I too am late sending and I want to appologize for that and thank my recipient for thier patience ,(I have to assume), so that I could produce the best bow I possilbe could without alot of pressure that might make me rush and screw something up. I ended up with a bow that I really want to give.
