Actually it's almost a copy of a old Schulz American longbow I've always wanted one ever since I seen this ad in a TBM years ago. Charlie Lamb brought one over that he had made last year while hunting and it was so smooth and quiet I knew I wanted to build one.
I had a couple old osage billets that I traded for at Mojam years ago laying around so I decided to try and make one.
I made a new form and added about a 1 1/2 of reflex and ended up almost strait after tillering and exercising the limbs 100's of times. I was figuring on a little string follow but haven't seen it yet.

Tracy
Very nice work.
NTN 66" 54@28 I can't wait to watch the Osage change to a golden brown, It
should look really good when done. :)

I used a old cow horn and osage for the tips and the horn came out almost clear.

Thanks for looking!
Tracy
Tracy... outstanding! A lovely bow
That bow looks good now, Tracy! I'm gonna have to use some of that boo.
Stan
Sweet! John might have used myrtle for the handle and a deep gloss finish - other than that it is a near perfect copy. Great style of bow and very well executed.
Thanks guys!!
Your right Shaun but I couldn't find any Spar Varnish around here but I will and plan on using it on the next bow. I plan on building the BBB bows also and will be looking for some myrtle.
I think I got the Osage for this bow from you at Mojam the year I had my Tipi there but not sure, I traded for alot of stuff that weeknd. Lol :D
Tracy
I love it, very nice work!
Hows she shoot?
Very nice Tracy
Sweet! I could see myself making one of those, I like it very much.
Super job Buddy!!
Will have some parts on the way tomorrow!
Thanks guys!
Ari, I had a heart valve replaced a few months ago and not pulling bows yet so I wish I knew how she shot but it won't be long before I get there. I should be ready for hunting season :D
Thanks Kenny, I can't wait to start the next one
Tracy
Excellent work! I love that tiller pic.
You got it...nice job!
Awesome buddy :notworthy:
Real nice, Tracy!
That's very nice! Perfect timing for me also. The guys at my range are getting an all wood class together and I have been wanting to make a bow just like that. I have what may be the dumbest question for you. On the osage, did you follow a ring or just shape it out? I've only built glass bows and simply don't know how to go about it. Where did you get your bamboo? Mike
fine lookin bow.
Bodork, I did not follow the rings on this bow. It was made from two different pieces of wood and Z spliced.
I got my Bamboo from Mike Yancey at Pine hollow longbows, He's a sponsor and a great guy to deal with.
Tracy
Looks good Tracy. :)
Mike
That looks awesome. You just convinced me to make one. My wife will surely thank you!
Nice bow!
Bodork, no need to chase a ring on the back of the osage when your putting a backing on it. It just needs to be flat, but you do have to watch for grain run off on the belly of the osage. That bit me in the arse one time already.
Tracy- Billets work awesome for making a backed bow don't they. My nicest one so far was from a pair of billets I had under my bench and almost became firewood.
Are you going to finish it as is or dye the boo?
Dang bud, it looks even better in the big pics. Congrats again. I hope I get to shoot this baby in a couple months :)
I love that bow!!
Yep Chris the billets work great, I think I will just let the osage age gracefully and see what I get.
Thats why I named her.
Ryan, Since are draws are the same you can shoot her all you want buddy.
Thanks for looking and all the nice comments guys :D
Tracy
Tracy, hope your better and shooting soon, it's a shame to have a beauty like that just sitting.
In the meantime I got one of Millers bamboo backed Osage hills arriving any day now, ill have sling some arrows for you.
Thanks Ari!! I'm doing much better and plan on start shooting soon.
Oh man, I would love to have one of Millers bows. I have never seen one in person but would like to I wish he had more picks on his website. If there a chance I sure hope you can post some picks of it when you get it.
Sling away :archer2: Thanks!!
Tracy
Nice job Tracy! That's a very nice job! I'm impressed.
I was just looking at that ad in one of the first issues of TBM I ever purchased.
Your bow is simply awesome!!!
Man that's beautiful!
Todd
Tracy...dude...that looks sweet. It looks like it has mojo already. I'll look forward to some Kansas stories this fall.
Sweet work on the new weapon Tracy! :notworthy:
That is a nice looking bow! What is the width taper? Is it a straight line from handle to tip?
Nice job Tracy!!
I bet it ends up being a shooter too!
Thanks for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
PS: Just for you... "How cool is this?... Way!!!... I'm saying...."
Thanks again guys!! :D
Randy, As soon as these 100 deg. days get out of here I will get my cams back out and start doing some scouting and try to find a few bucks to chase around with this bow come opening day. :archer2:
Charlie Lamb and Ryan Steadman are coming out to hunt with us this November So it's going to be a great season no matter what.
Greg, She's a 1 1/8 wide at the fades and 3/8 at the tips.
Tracy
Nothing "Plain" about that bow Tracy...
Looks good and the osage will age well I am sure. Get it outside so it can get some sun... ;)
pm'd some questions :)
K.S. Could you share a couple pictures of your form you used to make this bow?
I will post some picks tonight, Photobucket is messing up.
Tracy
What a gorgeously crafted bow Tracy...really, really fine work.
I'd love to see the form when you can post a pic also. Do you possibly have the dimensions of this bow that you would be willing to share?
Many thanks~
Lee
Thanks again guys!! Seems like alot of other people like this style and looks of this bow.
Here's a few picks of my cheap form, I add 1 1/2 of reflex and glue the bamboo and osage first then add the handle after.
I'm not a very good bowyer and I'm sure there's better ways but it works for me.
Tracy
The bow was 67" long, 1 1/8 at the widest point of the fades and 3/8 at the tips. I am trying a lam bow this time with some awesome lams and wood from Kennym. Everything is ready to go I just need to order some smooth-on and get it glued up.
I'm trying to build a bow right at 50 lbs for this season so I'm not sure what lams to use but Kenny and I think we have it pretty close and I went a little thinner on the bamboo this time.
Tracy
WOW Tracy, that is nice.I would love to see how you plane the bamboo down for a backing. I need to find someone close so I can watch how they do it.I hope your recovery goes well. Flint
Very nice work!
Looks great Tracy! Very nice.
Tracy, good is good! Bowyer is just a title!
Are ya using the lams, no glass that kennym, is advertising? Really want to try a bbo or all natural lam, too!
Your bow is as good looking as Shultz's, for sure! I, too, drooled over those in the adds of the '90s.
that is one of my favorite bows i've ever seen on here. great job!
Very nice......
Man, I really like that bow and I keep coming back to this thread to look at your pics.
You guys are making my day and I thank you again. :bigsmyl:
I'm learning a little bit more each time a build a new bow and getting some great advice from master bowyer Charlie lamb as I go. He will be back for the fall hunt so I will see how the bows pass the Charlie test!!
Yes Frank, On this next bow I will be using Kenny's lams and riser wood which are awesome by the way. The last bow was made from a board cut into billets 3"w x 5/8 thick x75" long and spliced. Way more work on the tillering but I'm used to that, Doing it the hard way :D
Everytime I looked through that old ad in the TBM's I couldn't stop going back and drooling over it. So simple yet great looking and after shooting Charlie's all bamboo model I was hooked. I said it earlier but I have to say it again it was so smooth and quiet I knew I had to build it. Charlie can sure build them thats for sure and I plan on staying with this type of bow Osage/Bamboo and all Bamboo till I get them down. I am working on a short sienew and snake skinned backed bow for the turkey blind but the Hill style is what I want to make mostly.
Jsweka, You need to build one bud. David Miller makes the same bow and he calls it "The Sage" and I have a hard time staying off his web site. He sure makes some gorgeous bows and I would love to shoot one some day.
Tracy
Tracy, Your killing Me Brother. Great job on another bow. Glad to see Your doing so well.
Still have those shafts for You and will get them to You soon. Keep up the good work. I'm hoping to complete a couple this winter Myself.
bretto
Hey Brett! How you been bud?
I'm still working on getting better and shooting some light weight bows and it's coming around slowly but going the right direction.
I forgot all about the arrows :knothead: We will have to get togather one of these days since it's cooling down nicely.
Just got a trail cam out and found a great buck to harass in a little over a month with the new bow.
Motivation!!! :bigsmyl:
Tracy
That is a beauty of a bow.
Very nice.
Really nice Tracy....I couldn't take it, parts are on the way to give it a try....great looking bow.
Todd
Daggum, that's purty! How's she shooting for you?
Were the osage lams 5/8" all the way from grip to tip? Thinking I would like to try something like this.
Again, beautiful work.
Tracy..
This is a very, very beautiful bow. And please...go back in this post, edit and delete "I'm not a very good bowyer" Bad bowyers dont make bows like that. :notworthy:
Good Stuff Tracy! I've been kicking the idea or trying to build one like Johns (I have two)....for whatever reason I havent just been busy I reckon. Flattening and getting the rind off without getting into the power fibers proves to be an interesting ordeal. lol.
Vinson Minor builds a pretty sweet, atleast looking, all wood lam bow. I wish he'd do a video!
Hope I am in Ks again next spring,I'll holler if I am...would love to see that bow in person!
sweet lookin bow. rv
Awesome bow! I would love to own a bow like that....guess I'll have to order some wood and whip up some plans for my next build. Thanks for sharing.
I'll just add to the chorus of accolades. Beautiful bow!
I agree with you I have spent serious time looking at that same Schulz bow advertisement.
Wow guys thanks for all the kind words.
I haven't been on here in a while and didn't see this thread was still going. I have been busy trying to chase down one of are big bucks to run a arrow through.
Stan, I wil send you a PM with my number and I will be glad to fill you in on how this bow was made.
Dan, That sounds like a plan. I hope everybody has a great season and shoots strait :archer2: :D
Tracy
Thank you, Tracy, I'm looking forward to chatting with you.
Trapper , I have a? What glue did you use ? That bow is very nice also.
Urac 185 Ray and thanks :)
Tracy
k.s. Trapper,
You said you kept going back to the Howard Hill add and looking at the bow...I keep going back to this thread to look at your bow. Very nice. thanks for the info and nice pics.
Hope your recovery continues.
Kirk
Thanks Kirk and the recovery is doing great. I'm getting ready to start another bow soon just been busy chasing deer around :D
Tracy
You know how you say,you kept looking at the bow,in the Ad?
Well,i keep going back to this bow and looking at it.
Like someone else said allready....
One of the nicest looking bows ive seen on here. Its what a longbow is sposta look like,in my mind.
very nice bow, great job.
I was finaly able to pull this bow and did a little hunting this morning and she made good on a fine turkey.
Tracy
Nice job Tracy. I see a lot of flechtings.
An awesome trophy with an awesome bow :clapper:
Yep, I gotta try building one like that someday.
Wow! Great bow and bird.
:clapper:
Good shooting there!
very nice Tracy, I like the looks of Osage with the bamboo backing. Great job and thanks for the all the pictures. The ultimate test of a new bow is how well it shoots and from the looks of that turkey, it does that too.
Well THERE is my next project...a copy pf a copy of the original. I love Hill style bows and this one is probably my favorite of all,
I hope you dont mind, but i wanted to bring this back up. Great looking bow. How about showing how dark it got this year?
I like this bow!
Thanks for bring this back up Dave.
A fine bow for sure! I gotta get some boo out of the corner now.
What kind of form did you use on this build
Just seen the pics, cool! That bow looks even better in the woods, with blood!
Great job, Tracy! Now we need to get ya to do a build-along. :bigsmyl:
x2 on the build along. I would like to see the form you used.
Kris there's a few picks of my form a few picks back on the thread to look at.
Thanks for bringing this back up and I have everything ready to build another bow just like the other one. Unfortunately she developed a crack in the Osage that's not fixable, I was drawing on a 10yd shot at a doe when it broke dang it!
I will miss that bow but now I can share the making of another one with you guys and I hope some of you will do the same. As soon as I can find some time here soon I will get a thread going with lots of picks. It's trapping season too and I would like to finish that up first, We flesh stretch and dry are fur for selling and that takes some time to do but I will get it done for you guys
Happy New Year's everybody!
Tracy
Beautiful bow! A laminated wood bow is next on my to do list. Thanks for posting.
Congratulations Tracy!!! What an achievement :notworthy:
I hear ya Tracy I do a little trapping myself from time to time. Not so much this season with all the rain we had. I trap alot in the bottoms and I was flooded out most of the season.
Looking forward to a build along when you get a chance. I got a piece of boo and a good slat with this build in mind.
I hate that your bow broke, bet that doe turned inside out LOL
The more I look at this the more I think about digging the supplies out to build one.
Tracy I think since you ended up with a little reflex I'm gonna glue mine up with about an inch of reflex and I figure I'll end up with a little string follow. What do you think?
The bow did end up with just a little bit of string follow and thats what I was hoping for.
Looking forward to seeing your bow when your done. :bigsmyl:
Tracy
Got my boo
Got my osage
Got my glue
Ready to go...lead the way cap'n
Tracy, I'm thinking on a trilam of boo back, bloodwood center lam and osage belly with a blood wood handle.
I spent a bit last night looking at hill bows and schulz bows. I want to get it as close to a Hill style that I can.
Is your belly tillered with a flat cross section or more of an oval cross section?
Sounds like some good wood combinations Kris and should make a fine looking bow. Looking forward to the finished project
Hang in there Nathan and I will start getting everything ready soon. :) Doe season and turkeys are still open till the end of January and Trapping ends soon after.
Tracy
MAN why you gotta rub it in...hunting has been over since Thanksgiving here...sorta...There are ALWAYS bunnies to chase and no closed season at all on em. I will busy myself until you get started i guess...darn oh darn I HAVE to hunt I guess lol
Sorry Nathan my bad! ;)
Plenty of rabits around Billings thats for sure, We hunted NW of town and down around Hardin and they were all over the place. Hope to get back there again one of these days.
Tracy
Sorry to hear of the bows demise, ready for the build along.
I just got threw putting her back together enough that she can hang on the wall. Just need to put a new finish on it and retire her.
I started a new bow this week and working on the pics for the thread.

Tracy
Could you post detailed specs please, length of riser, where to start the fades etc. thanks
Just saw this.....Man, what gorgeous bow! Thanks so much for sharing. It's inspiring to see such outstanding craftsmanship.
Let's put this back on top!!! A beauty and is exactly what a longbow should look like.
Carrying and shooting a bow like that has to give you the feeling you could walk on water. :^)
Very Nice.
definatly is! looking forward to this!!!
Yeah I was looking for this too! K.S. do you still have the pics to post up a build a long?
Time for an apology here, I was contacted by a PM from a nice fellow a couple days ago asking about this type of bow he had seen on here that I made. He needed some information on how I made mine and it reminded me of this thread.
Not long after offering up to do a build along on here I had some health problems. I was recovering from a heart valve replacement when I started building bows again and began this thread.
Not long after saying I would do a build along I had a accidently fall. I am on blood thinners for life from the mechanical heart valve operation I had and I ended up having 9 brain hemerroges and had 3 brain surgerys from this fall. I was in ICU and in the hospital for quite a while, I don't remember it but I do remember some of the rehab and finally walking again and getting to come home with a very large piece of my skull removed and wearing a helmet to protect it. They were able to fix my head and I was able to regain most of my memory except for right before and during the hospital stay.
I'm happy to say I've pretty much healed up from the injury's, I had to retire on disability but I was close to retirement anyway. I will probably have seizures and some vision problems the rest of my life but so far they haven't been to bad as long as I stay on my medicine. I'm back to playing with wood and shooting my bows and looking forward to hunting season again. I'm happy to still be here and still be enjoying my family, friends and doing some of the things I love to do.
I'm sorry for not finishing the thread and please except my apology and I hope some of you guys went on to build your own bows just like you wanted to. There's a lot of good bowyers on here.
Tracy
Tracy - I wondered what happened to you since you didn't post on the bench in a long time. You've sure gone through a lot and I'm happy to hear things are on the mend and you're back to enjoying archery again. Your bows are awesome and I have saved some of your pics to my hard drive just to ogle at every now and then.
I'm glad your back and good luck this season.
Jeez Tracy glad to hear your ok. Never do you have to apologize for things like this. Enjoy your family and we look forward to seeing what your able to create and jump back into things. God bless and good luck!
Absolutely no need to apologize!!! Explain, sure. We're sorry to hear what's been going on, and glad to hear you're recovering as well as you are. Apologize, heck no!
What an ordeal to go through and anextraordinary recovery. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying life again. What part of KS are you from? I'm from Wichita. Brett
Hope everything works out for you..
I'm glad you made it through all of that and you're back online with us!
No need to apologize bud! So good to see you building again. Can't wait to see your next creations, you do amazing work :)
Thank you for bringing this back- and glad you`re doing fine again!
I`d have a qustion too- would pheart be o.k. or even good for such kind of bow, glued straight and expecting 1-2" of set?
(only have backings, actionboo and pheart in suitable sizes in stock a.t.m.)
I know usually it`s better for core but compared to RD LBs n such the stress seems to be less likely to overpower the belly even with boo backing?!
Tracy. Sorry to hear about your health problems. That was a nice bow you made. I made one similar to it a few years ago. I used lemonwood, madake bamboo and rosewood for the riser with some albino water buffalo for overlays. Mine came out at 70#@29" but it draws smoothly for the higher poundage being its 70".
The lemonwood was billets so I used a z splice and Urac185 as well for both that and the bamboo, riser glue up.

Something sweet about bamboo backed bows.
Here is the lemonwood one next to a osage backed bamboo bow.

Hey Tracy,
Glad to hear you're out and about and building as well! Honestly I get on here looking for more builds..or maybe JD building the statics again, another dang fine looking and I'm sure shooting bow as well!
I have my pile of slats sitting out with a long list of to do's ahead. Just got in from moose, no joy but loads of fun! took forever to draw the tag and it was well worth it! Time to turn back to the shop myself and get some projects knocked out so I can finally get to building! Springs right around the corner. Winter, well, its days away now LOL!
Stay in touch! I think KS is out again this coming spring. Dads talking about coming up for steelies this spring. Its a dang good thing I can fish. As much as I love bowhunting, fishing still fills the freezer after letting 99% of everything go ;) .
Dan
hey if you think of it, once I get back tinkering I'll need your mailing addy again, one of the projects lol!
