When I look at long bows on here it looks to me like the limbs are the same thickness all the way to the tips. I was under the impression that there would be a taper from the handle to the nocks. the handle being the thickest. Or is the taper just so gradual you can't tell?

What style of longbow are you referring to? An English-style longbow, flatbow, or one of the more modern varieties? Generally, the taper is very minimal and would be hard to discern in most of the pictures posted here. However, there are some designs, such as the pyramid bow, where the thickness of the limbs remains constant from the end of the fade to the tips. Hope that helps a bit :)
