Title: When should I switch to short-string?
Post by: wildbill001 on June 01, 2011, 04:54:00 PM
My first born, er, bow.  Red-Oak board bow, pyramid-style/design.  67"ntn and am shooting for 35# @27".
Non-bending handle.

Got the shape roughed out and have started tillering with a long-string.  Am currently at limb thickness just under .5".  Currently pulling about 27# at 17" draw.  My question is when do I or when should I switch to a short-string?

BTW, will post pics later this evening.

TIA

Bill

When I get the tips moving 10" and limbs bending even.

10" from the relaxed vertical?  Just want to make sure.  Hate the break this before I shoot the first arrow.

If my limbs are bending even I switch to a short string when the limbs are bending to where they would be at brace height with the short string.

wild, have you floor tillered it yet?  If you floor tillered to get a nice bend, it shouldn't be the long string much at all.  Just to even stuff up some.

10" isn't a hard rule, but I get the short braced string on as soon as I can brace it.  Which is usually 10" of movement.

My "long string" is just long enough to get on the bow without bending the limbs.  Once I get the limbs bending a little, I keep shortening the string a little as I go.  Staying with the long string for too long can cause the bow to be under weight when finished.  Just my two cents worth.

I long string tiller out to 10 inches of string movement. Looking for good limb bending and target weight. Then I string it. Info on my site.

Here is a pic of the board before doing any shaping.  All I have done at this point is glue on a handle of canarywood.

Oh, and I rough-cut the fades

Here is a closer look at the fade(s)

Here is what the shape looks like from the bow back

Here is the tiller so far.  First, full frontal, 17" draw at 27#.  Staring at the picture, it looks like I'm developing/developed a bit of a hinge on the right limb, maybe?  About 8" from handle?

Closer look at the left limb.  Still a bit stiffer than the right.

And the right limb

It is currently 67" ntn.  Again, I'm aiming for 35# @ 27".  But seeing as this is my first, I'll be happy if it doesn't explode before I shoot the first arrow.

What's the verdict so far?

Lots of run offs or run outs on that board. Be careful especially since you are using a tillering stick. I posted my site above. It has info on board choice. Jawge
