Title: what wood looks good with walnut
Post by: vth0kie12 on May 25, 2011, 11:16:00 AM
i can get some free blocks of walnut for a riser. now i am looking for a wood that will look good with walnut (for accent strip and limbs under clear glass). i was thik about bocote, but i think the grain is going to be too dark.

so what do you guys think would look good with walnut?

I like to contrast light colored woods with walnut.  I am getting ready to start a boo core with walnut riser and walnut belly lams.  Will probably lam some boo in the walnut riser also.  Walnut has almost a neutral color to it and to me its hard to match a color wood to a neutral.

never thought of osage.

i like dark woods for limbs, i thought aboutt tyring to get some curly maple and trying to dye it to match the walnut.

I think the light color of maple goes perfectly with walnut.

Any bright wood like osage, maple or bamboo would look very nice.  I have used some figured cherry lately. It's a bit darker than maple, but it looks absolutely awesome.

I bought all the materials in this bow from KennyM, Walnut riser with curly maple(natural) and black glass accents, limbs are red elm tapers and walnut veneers. I recently reshaped the grip..   (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/firstlongbowfinishon.jpg)

I LIKE HARD MAPLE WITH WALNUT.
ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO, A GOOD BOW COMPANY IN POCAHONTAS COUNTY, WV MADE A BEAUTIFUL RECURVE OF THIN VENEERS OF ALTERNATING WALNUT AND MAPLE.

I have used Zebra , purpleheart,. Fancy maple, Ebony, bloodwood, osage, yew, wenge, tigerwood, myrtlewood , bacote, cocabola, all to good effect. recently I built a fantastic longbow using Oregon Claro burl walnut and myrtle veneer limbs I got from Idaho Curt. The wood was so fantastic that I could not put a stripe in it so I cut a fang and used red and black glass on each side of it to form a self stripe of the walnut. I think it turned out pretty good. The quality of the walnut makes a huge difference in how you treat it though. If it is fairly plain you use it for color and add contrasting woods. If it is top grade like Curt just showed it is hard to use anything else with it IMHO.

God bless you all, Steve
