So here I go on my fist build along
1) Here are the brackets for my press I made myself
All welded and drilled

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110051.jpg
2) I put the brackets aside and worked on my heat box
Here is my heat box first
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy3ofP1110053.jpg
I then put some weather stripping where the lid sits
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110054.jpg
I then cocked the inside with some white cocking
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110058.jpg
Great build along! Please resize pics to 600 pixels or less
The I started to install electrical
First I installed two gang boxes
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110056.jpg
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110055.jpg
Then I started wiring from one to another
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110057.jpg
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110061.jpg
Then I installed a plug end on my power cord that lead out of my heat box
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110060.jpg
Then I attached that cord ran the cord out of the box
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Copy2ofP1110059.jpg
Here is my finished wiring job
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/CopyofP1110062.jpg
Next I started to line my box with aluminum foil and tape
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110063.jpg
SHOULD I VENT MY HEAT BOX???? ANY TIPS AND SUGGESTION WOULD BE GREAT
Here is my foil job almost complete
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110072.jpg
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110071.jpg
Now here I go on my riser
I all ready glued it up but here it is before I plan it down to dimensions
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110065.jpg
It made out of 2 pieces dark walnut and a strip of cherry, some lighter walnut, another strip of cherry, and two more pieces dark walnut
And here is it after planned out
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110068.jpg
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110070.jpg
I'm going to make it 19'' riser but I left an inch on either side for now
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110069.jpg
Can anybody help me with making my riser like this?
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/Riser6.jpg
I'd like to do that with 2 strips of cherry
Will put more photos up tommorow might start making my press or work on my riser.
Once again any tips, pointers, suggestions, anything will be very helpful for me. Thanks
I can see this is going to be a good one. I can see lots of craftsmanship already. No, you don't have to vent the heat box, in fact I wouldn't. As for the riser cuts I have never done that, but think some sort of swing jig on the band saw would do that. KennyM does those all the time. I kind of want to know myself. Good luck
I agree, lot's of detail already which is very helpful. I'd also like to learn how to make some nice accent stripes like that.
-Jay
Thanks for the complements, I'm really excited to see the finished product. So glad my teacher is letting me make one in wood shop.
Excellent and I am looking forward to the rest of the build.
A swing jib will help you with those cuts, but you can also do it by hand fitting the pieces together. It will take some fine tuning and more time, but I have done several by hand it it works fine. Cut and sand your first arc piece, then trace it on, cut and sand until it fits perfectly with the lamination spacers in between the two pieces.
One other note, welding on the large single nut on the other side of your form brackets will help (as you wont have to mess with a wrench during the glue up)
Here are some drawings I did for my riser I think I'll cut the first curve out tomorrow.

http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110079.jpg
Now, I may be completely off base with this suggestion, and if I am, hopefully some of the more experienced members will set me straight.
I made a form once with the double bolts on one half of the form and a single bolt on the other half like your brackets indicate. That form was just not solid. The half with the single bolt allowed the two form halves to shift quite a little bit. I took one bow off it but when the hose was inflating, the two halves were squirming around. The form was for a flat long bow so there was no limb shape to help with alignment.
Still have that form and will use it again but do intend to put an additional bolts in the brackets.
Carnt wait for more Thanks Shane
The only thing I would be worried about are the plastic boxes and lights. If you use 150 or 200 watt bulbs, the plastic might melt. I like to use metal boxes and porcelean keyless lights. I'm a electrician so I worry about those things. I put my boxes on the outside of my heat box with only the light fixture in the box. Don
hmm i never thought of that well i'll see how thing go first try i think. I'm using 200 watt bulbs so might have a problem.
You plastic fixtures WILL melt, they did on my box using 150w bulbs. They smoke an char and eventually the bulb starts to fall out. Replace those with porcelain ones right away. I thought I was going to burn my shop down with all the smoke rolling out. Besides that, looks awesome. Glad I am not the only one that wires stuff up with extension cord.
My quickie swing jig, works well!

Thanks Kenny, but I all ready cut it out and I think it worked pretty good. By the way Kenny I'm the guy thats been emailing you about that order, not sure if you knew.

Before i glue my riser i want to make shure i have th right type of glue. Should i use an expanding glue? wood glue? expoxy? would tightbond work. what typr of glue should i use on the curved cuts in my riser with the strips of cherry?
I would use smooth-on for the entire riser glue up.No worries that way- looking good!!
Awesome thread,great pictures!
Thanks didn't get much done today other than switching my gang boxes to metal and foiling by the rest of my heat box, I didn't have my camera but I will on Monday. Other than that just waiting on my material.
Also, if anyone has anything they would like to share to help me out, tips, answers to my questions, that would be great, can never stop learning things from experienced bow makers.
I hope to get going on the rest of my bow very soon.

and so on and so on
if anyone has tip or pointers of any of these or would like to share how they do them please do!!
any other hits or secrets that could help me would be great!!!
Your form looks good. I would put a bunch of wood screws in it so the glue doesn't let go when it gets hot in the oven.
okay I'll do that, should i pree drill so it dosn't crack or can i just go ahead
It's not a bad idea to pre drill the ones close to the surface, the rest you won't need to worry about splits/cracks.
more on my build coming soon had a slight set back while my meterial arrives
Hey Nick, thought it would have been there, want me to track it?
Hey Kenny no i got it i was talking about my press meterial. I sent the check a long time ago have you got it yet?
On my heat boxes whether for drying or curing I put the lights at the bottom with spacers to keep everything off of them. I figured the heat would rise off of the lights and circulate the air a bit for a more even temp.It may or may not have helped though.
Sweet build along. Thanks or posting!
And here we go again i changed my riser a little bit i put 3 strips of cherry and 1 walnut in the curve instead and shaped it out alot..
i will be glueing up my arms pretty soon i tryed my oven out for the first time today and looks good got it to a steady 175. also i put some formica on my press and put my air hose together will get you some pics on the soon but here is some pic on my almost finished riser

there we have it my first glue up...... any suggestions
I'm watching this one closely. I got my form and box made and just need to get my materials from Kenny and I'll be spreading glue!! Looks good so far.
i glued my limbs up.
started with putting some paper on the table
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110335.jpg
the linned my form with seran wrap
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110336.jpg
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110334.jpg
after that i turned my heat box on and started to warm up my limbs for about 25 min
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110326.jpg
while i waited i checked my hose, tighted the end and made sure there was no leaks. i also put a center line on my fiberglass
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110333.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110330.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110332.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110329.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110328.jpg
then i put my glue in the oven
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110324.jpg
while my glue warmed up for about 10 min i clean my limbs and fierglass
i do this with a dremmal and a stiff brush
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110325.jpg
next i mexed my glue
i used little plastic cup with a 1 to 1 ratio and i just eye ball the amount
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110321.jpg
also i drilled my hole for my riser inserts and with my left over smooth on i was planning on glueing them in
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110323.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110322.jpg
after i installed them in my riser i put it infront of some lights to cure http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110320.jpg
here is what my bow looks like so far not bolted in and the limbs aren't cut out yet
http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/NRootski/P1110319.jpg
Your getting closer, this thing will be hunt ready before long!
NRudder, Please resize your pics to 640 or less. You can do this in photo bucket. I have edited your post 2 times. You can find a a tutorial in the trad gang and computers page.

Great build along by the way.
okay sorry
