I found the motherlode of 6" straight as an arrow Shag bark. I found this while hauling out the hickory. I cut a pole and brought it out. What is it? Its from the Central Michigan area. (http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m518/chrislovesjean/000_0168.jpg?t=1303680963)
That is a Mongolian Tulip Tree.
What Roy said...........Art
The one on left is hickory, the other could be a tulip...
Is it worth a bow? Oops, I forgot to mention its the chunk on the right. The one on the left is certainly hickory, I found all I will ever need/want.
Sure is bow worthy, Mongolian Tulip wood is excellent bow wood.
mongolian tulip on the right
one on the Left for sure hickory but the one on the right looks like a tulip tree to me, probably mongolian. It'll Make a great bow.
I'm glad you all identified that because I've got a whole slew of them around here along the river. Is it fairly easy to work like Osage or is it challenging to work with? Sapwood on or off?
I'm curious cause I'm going to start looking for other woods to build some bows for myself out of sometime in the future.
I actually always thought that was Buckeye? Which isn't a good hardwood in my opinion, but I'm glad you all made the correct ID on it.
Thats good news. I have a huge amount of both hickory and tulip to gather up then. Thanks for the good info guys. Chris I have to find other woods because my area is void of osage. I can get any kind of whitewood I want in unlimited qtys. Im peeling and sealing both staves. I will let you know how the tulip works out.
:) Atta Boy...
Thanks Pearl, let me know how the tulip works out cause I gotta ton of that stuff around here.
I just split and peeled 4 very nice knot free staves. The bark and sapwood came off in a flash and the log split very easily. Now the waiting............
Pics? I wanna see what the inside of that stuff looks like. I know I've got a crap load of it down here.

And you are sending Roy how many?
ZERO old man!...............not now anyways. I will wait until they dry down more so shipping is cheaper!
I'll pay the shipping. Send me some of that Mongolian Gold........
That's the best there is.
You meant Magnoila Tulip right? I cant find find Mongolian Tulip anywhere on the net? Quit whining about my stave stash you sissy pants 3 under shooter from SW PA, you know your going to get a stave already!
No Mongolian Tulip? What the heck is it then?
I'm lost.........course that ain't nothin' new. :smileystooges:
it looke and sounds like hackberry.
Looks like Locust to me.
My first thought was hackberry(aka sugarberry). Makes great bows! Never heard of Mongolian(magnolia) tulip.
After scouring pictures I believe it to be Hackberry as well. The Tulip bark is too smooth to match up. Hackberry seems to look almost the same. We have no leaves yet so I can only use the bark to identify it. I guess I have a large collection of Hackberry staves now! Either way Im a happy guy!
LOL, I made it up Pearl:)
You crusty ol' man! After reading and article in PA about the "Hackberry Hammer" I have been wanting to build a Hackberry bow, so Im happy! I have nice American Elm coming my way in week or so. Thats good too!
That one got rode for a good little bit didn't it Roy, The others piling on helped a great deal.
Good stuff.
I think Hackberry also Chris. have fun with it.
Chuck
Well Chuck, I sort of sent pm's to a few guys to join in:)
Just think .....I have a semi driving friend of mine bring a LOAD of the straightest Indiana osage you ever seen right to my house in the next week or so. Sure will be nice having that huge pile to work with hey Roybert?
Well, that's still good news then Pearl cause I really do have lots of those around here. I won't hesitate to cut one now and try my hand at a bow from it.
I honestly didn't know at first, but Roy sent me a PM later on to let me in on it.
So I got poked right there along with ya. :biglaugh:
What an awesome thread! lmao!
haha mongolian tulip... Who wood believe such a thing? Could have said it was western northern southern sugerbeen. All in good fun.
Ya it was fun for a while:) LOL, sorry Pearly Boy..
This is the first time I've read this thread and I have to admit I almost lost interest on the first page because I had never heard of mongolian tulip. Glad I kept on reading. Thats Funny!!!
Sorry Pearly, Roy said he'd twist my string if'n I didn't go along. Dang that crusty ol' man anyhow :biglaugh: ............Art

any newbie can see that, that is NOT western northern southern sugarbean. the barks too rough. don
Pearly Boy, just save me a couple good staves son. Thanks, Ole Crusty Roybert in Pa.
hearing how it split and the bark said hackberry to me its an easy splitter, not a good idea to have them close to a house ice stroms and wind due them in.that is a nice looking log you got good luck let us know how it goes I also read that they make good bows and I have a good source of them.
I figured you did Roy,That was funny.
Chris, sounds like you are gonna be pulling some shavings eh?
good find by the way. A few weeks ago and I wouldn't have know it was hackberry. Right before ojam I ended up with two 18in. Logs 66in. and 72in. I split one up and took it down to a ring, sealed the back, and then worked it down to profile @ ojam and a few days after I got home it curled itself into perfect reflex... Then passed that and went to about 8 1/2 in. of reflex. The ones I split, chased to a ring and left full size curled nicly into 2 inches or so of reflex. Very nice stuff.
Hmmmm.......guess I'm gonna have to get to Hackin' after some Hackberry?
Does it actually have rings to chase or is it just solid white wood? Never seen it or used it before, but it sounds like it makes a good bent stick.
You should be able to just peel the bark and make a bow.
You will get a stave alright Roy, whether you will be able to dislodge it and use it is another question? .............The bark and sapwood came right off to a perfect back with ease, no ring chasing involved. Mine have curled about 2" already. I sealed the ends and left the rest bare. I am going to give them a year before touch them. I have an unlimited supply where this log came from so I plan on getting another 10-12 staves in the next week or so.
Well I love you too Pearly Boy:) LMAO and glad it all worked out.
Wow that makes me wanna go cut some even more now, I like the sounds of that and it even puts it's own reflex in itself........what more could a guy ask for? Maybe you could scream real loud at it and it would just jump out of the bark by itself?
Hey Roybert, I'm gonna ask the mods if they can add a new emoticon to the list. I'd like to see a little crawfish running backwards so I could use it on you at times like these. :goldtooth:
pearl- I'm going to work it alot sooner. Probably next week. If I get off my bum and finish my sons bow. I've had it in the hot box for a few weeks now and it seems pretty dry. here is a pic of the "natural" reflex.

I'm interested to see how this hackberry works out. I just cut some of it myself a few weeks ago.
Thats' awesome...Pearly no worries I would've fallen for it. I probably would have searched for days on mongolian tulip. Great thread, hope the staves make some great bows for you!
I just figured it had an exotic name, like Russian olive.

Holy Smokes!! That is some serious reflex!
I like it!!
Can't wait to see how this one turns out, please do a little follow along on it if you would Dave.
I now have 7 full staves and 2 sets of sisters worth of mongolian tulip to work this winter. The hickory is coming next. My plan is to have 25-30 peeled and sealed staves of various variety for winter working.
I heard somewhere that Mongolian Tulip causes dementia. Have you experienced any ill thoughts towards others, strange dreams, or hallucinations? :saywhat:
Not really, but fascinations of revenge keep drifting through my head??????? Could just be a side effect of the sapwood I touched while peeling the staves?????
:D
