Ready to file string grooves in my first TD Recurve. The Bingham plan / book, says not to file through the fiberglass. Yet, I have seen several that did file through the glass.
So, can you file through it or not?
Only on the edges!
I would glue some type of overlay on the back (target side) of the limbs and not get into the glass on the flat of the limb. The overlay strengthens the string grooves and allows you to round over so it doesn't cut the string on edges of limb.
Blue EagleBum - Are you talking about the groove on the belly of the limb where the string (not the loops) comes in contact with the limb? If that's what you meant, then go with what Bingham's says and don't file through the glass. I've never seen it filed completely though on a recurve.
If you're talking on edges - follow Kenny's advice.
John, I been building d/r' s too long, plumb forgot the alignment groove!!
Yes Sir. The belly where the string comes in contact and basically helps align the string. Thanks.
Thank you too Mr. KennyM. I intend to do a tip overlay of phenolic and then a piece of wood from the cutoff of my riser. Bow limbs are hard rock maple with a bubinga riser.
Thanks again.
I use a chainsaw file and file a shallow groove about 1/2 way thru the belly glass.. I have seen a few bowyers that add an overlay on the belly side and only file the groove into it. On the back side or target side of my recurves I use multiple layers of 1/16 inch phenolic and 030 glass. there was a recent tip thread where different styles of tips were shown
