So a couple of months ago I perry reflexed a 3/4 osage and 1/8 hickory backing. Last week I finally cut out the profile on a bandsaw. Tonight I was going to begin on the belly taper with my draw knife. Having experience with the draw knife on hickory only you can imagine what happened. About 30 sec. in rip, a chunk of osage that split down to the backing. Pretty hard to believe considering how little pressure I was applying that a draw knife is safe to use at all. Hard and expensive lesson learned

A rasp or spoke shave might be a better tool to use. And, work with the grain and not against it.
If you used TiteBond glue a little heat will help you remove the backing so you can add another.

+1 on the rasp and spoke shave, I never touch the draw knife once the profile is roughed out. It's all rasp and spoke shave from that point forward.
I'm definitely going to use a rasp on osage from this point forward. Not sure what I was thinking. I just assumed with all the great things I heard of osage it would peel back just as hickory had...wrong!
Just consider it practice.You live and learn, don't beat yourself up.
You might also want to try a card scraper. It gives a nice finish and the progress is slow, so you can sneak up on what your looking for. If you do try it, remember to skew it, or it will have a tendency to step down the growth rings.

Even when I'm cleaning up staves or billets I have to be careful not to gouge too deep. If/when I see a large piece starting to gouge too deep I stop, turn around and work it from the other direction and cut that piece off. Then you can work it down with a rasp without tearing up your stave. You'll never rip a piece too big off with a rasp, but you can take too much if you aren't careful.
That's how we all learn, sometimes you gotta tear up some stuff to make some good stuff.
Bona, we are fine here in the mountains. Very rarely have tornados here. We did have 4" of rain and heavy winds but not much damage. Most of those tornados were in the area around Raleigh in the middle to eastern part of NC.
Dang I hate that for you, I really do. So far I've only worked on hickory wanting to get my hands on some osage though. Although it sucks thanks for you posting your "lesson". I probably would have done the same thing you did.
D, that's why I posted it. The difference in the two woods is surprising. Rookie mistake to assume something. Good luck when you decide to tackle your first osage.
