I'm in the process of refinishing one of my bow with tru oil, this will be the third coat and while the gloss finish is great, I'd like to gat it satin any tips. So far I have been using 0000 steel wool between coats.
Minwax satin spray spar urethane works really great over tru-oil to cut the shine. Or you can wait a week or so until the tru-oil set good, and then dip your OOOO steel wool in wax and buff with that. But the spray dulls a little better........Art
I use spray satin poly on all my Tru-Oil finished bows. Works great and only takes a quick spray on each limb to get a good satin finish.
I just use OOOO steel wool and lightly buff the finish coat then polish with Pledge furniture polish. The polish fill the tiny little scratches that the fine steel wool leaves behind and you end up with a nice satin finish that's pretty but not glossy.
And a lemony fresh scent after polishing, right Chris? I do the same as Pat, hit it with a light coat of satin from 12-14" away. Kind of spatters it nicely.
I use 0000 steel wool between coats and on the final coat I buff it with a piece of burlap after the steel wool.
Yeah, fine steel wool. Lightly rub over the finish. With 3 coats, your not going to remove anything. Just the sheen!
If you want to bring it back to a shine after hunting season, use some polishing compound, and buff!
I don't know but this Tru Oil gloss is growing on me. I did hit it with some spray poly semi gloss and then lightly sanded with 0000 steel wool and then covered it with tru oil again, now it's glossy and textured. Going to hit it with some polishing wax in a couple of deals.
I like the Tru-oil gloss too. For hunting season I just wax the bow with paste wax and don't buff it off till I am done hunting. Bob
Someone mentioned to use a Mothers Car polishing Wax to dull the finish, anyone else try car wax or cleaning polish.
I have used parafin wax in the past to dull down my osage bow with tru-oil on it.

I've never done it on a bow, but I second the 0000 steel wool. I have dulled alot of stained wood work ive done this way.....
I've done many gunstocks with Tru-oil and have buffed the final coat with 4/0 steel wool and then buffed it with an old wool sock. Gives a great finish.
