I would also like to do the same thing, but I'm worried about the shipping. They have the "Heavy item" symbol next to the boo backing in the cataloge, which means more shipping. I guess I could call?
I know the shipping rates on long items since I ship Osage staves.
Anybody here have any that's at least 66-68" long they want to trade or sell? Shoot me a PM and we'll do some horse swappin.
I have a real nice piece attached to the back of a splintered BBO you can have Chris!
Binghams, Rudder, Missouri Trading and Bamboo Rattan all sell slats. Plus a million more places if you search the web. Thae hard part isnt getting boo, its getting good boo that can be tricky.
Binghams sells them for $12.50

I just went there and put one in my cart and it said actual shipping would be charged to my credit card when it ships. Where did you see free shipping at Binghams?
Well maybe I am wrong then, but I printed out the receipt and it says 0 shipping and total charge is what the boo cost. Time will tell I guess. Sorry if I lead ya all astray. I am an old guy just trying to get into Heaven ya know:)
:biglaugh:
Well, I hope you are right about no shipping charge cause I'll be ording some shortly after I find out from you how it goes. That is a good price on boo even if there is a shipping charge.
I'm trying to get into Heaven too Roy, that's why I'm so nice to everybody. :deadhorse:
When you guy's get your Binghams boo in, how about letting us know how the quality is? I only have four pieces left and will need to order some soon.
Will do Walt. It's Moso if that matters to ya.
I ordered one piece from binghams a couple of weeks ago. The quality is good, and shipping was quick...but certainly not free. I fell for the shipping is exact cost and it was $29.00 for a $12 piece of boo.
OUCH.
I think the expensive shipping is because it it over-sized. They will cut it in half for you to save on the shipping I think.
CJ
Cutting it in half wouldn't do much good on a 68" Osage longbow.
They probably use UPS instead of US Postal Service. UPS is outrageous on something long and they probably use a overbuilt shipping tube?
I sent an entire longbow in a 70" carpet tube for around $17 bucks through US Postal.
I got mine from here:
http://www.mastergardenproducts.com/bambooplanks.htm
Total with shipping for 10 planks was about $58 (31.88 for the 'boo and the rest is shipping). Still, that works out to less than $6/plank.
did you see their bamboo dowell- make good arrows!!- i might get a few with my boo order and see what they spine out at- i suspect they will be a little soft.

So how was the quality? Worthy of bow backing material?
That's definitely the cheapest I've ever seen if it's good quality stuff.

Absolutely good stuff! The nodes on all mine were pretty long and they're all straight.
I've got some pictures on my computer of a bamboo-backed ipe bow I finished last week that shows one of the pieces of bamboo - let me see if I can upload them.
Dang, I see I can't upload pictures from my computer. So, no photos, but the bamboo I got was really good for bow making. Keep in mind you're going to have to prepare it (cut it and sand it), but it worked great for my first bow.
You can't upload directly from your computer. You have to use a picture hosting service like photobucket that creates a link for the pic. It's not hard once you get the hang of it.
Here's a tutorial that I wrote up some time back and I just paste it again when the question comes up on how to post and resize pics.
If you have any questions just send me a PM or an email. Thanks for the tip on the boo.
--------------------------------------------------
**Resize Pics**
Move your mouse over your picture in photobucket and a menu will drop down. In the blue bar right under the pic you will see "Share/Edit/Delete/Move" click on "Edit"
When the picture comes up on the edit screen, you will see a series of buttons at the top as follows "Auto Fix/Red Eye/Crop/Resize" click on "Resize"
Then you will see 2 sliding buttons to the upper right next to the size dimensions. Move the height and width buttons until it says 640 x 480 and then just to the right of the buttons you will see 2 check boxes. The first box says "Use Percentages" and the other says "Keep Proportions" you want to check the "Keep Proportions" box. Then go down to the bottom of the page and click "Replace Original" this will resize the picture so you can copy it here. As long as that box that says "Keep Proportions" remains checked, all your pictures that you upload to Photobucket in the future will automatically be resized to those dimensions.
**Upload Pics**
First go to Photobucket.com and create a FREE account. Follow the directions on photobucket to upload your pics from your computer to your photobucket account.
Now.....when you want to copy and past a pic on a website here's what you do.
In your album on Photobucket where the pic is saved, hover your mouse over the pic. A menu will drop down and you have a list of link options that say "Email/Direct Link/HTML Code/Image Code" left click the one that says "Image Code" now come back over here to your message and click on the screen where you want the pic. Now while the cursor is flashing, right click there and when the menu pops up go to "Paste" and left click that. Your image code link will be posted in the message body for your pic. You can go the bottom on your message and click "Preview" to see your message before you hit "Add Reply" to see what your message will look like before posting to the forum so you will be able to make sure you posted the picture link correctly. If you did it right, the picture will show up in the message body.
Hope all that makes sense and helps you somewhat?
Print these directions out if you need to so you can read through them while your trying to copy and paste your pics, and resize them.

soooo, lets say one wants to dabble in the world of Laminate builds (wood, boo, etc) how does one go about prepping and making the Boo ready down to the glue up phase?
go into the buildalong forum. Look up J.D. Jones bamboo backed recurve buildalong.
$29.00 GGGGEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ that is high.
Just got my 4 pieces of boo from Binghams. I gotta say it is the nicest boo I have ever gotten anywhere. Just perfect, back side is so smooth and clean, it almost looks polished and clear coated. The shipping was $19.71 on 4 pieces, I didn't think that was too bad.
Roy, were those full length pieces, or cut down?
Stan

Roy, I was just getting ready to ask the question of type of boo... Would you be refering ot MOSO as the type of Boo?
Thanks
Full length Moso Boo.

heres a decent place..
That's the stuff that I'm using right now. I'm not a good judge of bamboo because I have no experience with any other kind of bamboo, but I do know wood and quality when I see it. Let me tell you that there's nothing wrong with the bamboo from master garden products Moso Boo. What you save in the long run over buying the stuff for over or close to $20 a piece from major trad suppliers will more than make up for what little bit you may think your losing in the quality.
Truth be known the major trad suppliers may be getting theirs from this place also?? If so, look at the dough they are raking in.
Just got mine from Binghams last night. $39 shipping for 3 slats and some smooth-on (which was in its own box).
Flattened one on the jointer immediately out of the box 'cause I couldn't resist. From what I can tell, the boo is great quality. Will be happy to buy from them again, but I think you need to buy several at a time to make the shipping work out.

Dangit, didn't need to hear that Semo :saywhat: I was already doing all I could to stay away from the Boo while watching your Boo Lam build but this news may be the final nail in my coffin (what can I say, I'm easily tempted :goldtooth: )
Has any one ordered from Franks Cane and Rush in Califorina? Its been awhile since I placed a order but with shipping it was reasonable.
I ordered some lams from binghams and it still hasn't come in and it has been a month. They say it shipped 3 days ago so we will see. It just makes it hard to order from them when it takes so long.
