Title: Chased my first ring
Post by: bowhntineverythingnh03743 on March 26, 2011, 11:50:00 PM
Hey guys,
It is 2348 hours and I just got done chasing my first osage ring on a short stave I have. It was AWESOME... Some slow goings at the begining but I didn't want to screw it up.

Quick question I have just a few hair line scraps in the back of the bow which I did with my scraper. Will these affect the back. I will post some pictures of it. I did not violate into the next ring though just as an FYI.... I AM HOOKED!!!

You got the bug now! As long as you did not violate the ring you should be good. Your gonna have to sand it anyways. You do want to make sure you ain't got any knicks in the back.

If they are surface scratches they shouldn't be a problem. You should sand the back smooth before stressing it just to be safe. I would also seal the back with shellac before going any further. I have had well seasoned osage check after uncovering a new back ring. The shellac can be easily removed later if needed or any other finish can go right over it.

Yep, that's the last thing I do is the final sanding. My hands get dirt all over the bow anyway during the build process, so I have to sand off what my grubby paws left behind.

That's a good idea about the shellac Pat, would a light coat of spray on poly do the same thing?
That would save some sanding later on.

Good job Justin, it will only get easier and you will get quicker the more you do.

Can we get some pics?
