Title: Refinish Question
Post by: yaderehey on March 21, 2011, 11:21:00 PM
I am working on refinishing a riser that is made from cocobolo.  I know there can be some problems with the oily nature of this wood.  I was going to use tru-oil for the finish.  Should it stick OK to the cocobolo?  If I need to seal the wood what should I use?  Thanks in advance for any help!

Wipe it down with acetone until the rag stays almost clean with very little orange on it. Seal it with super glue, use some 600 grit to smooth it back down and put your Tru Oil on normally. The Tru Oil alone will not hold back the oils.

I haven'd sealed a bow with super glue then tru oil before but I'm thinking about it on my next project.  I've used deft on cocobolo with good luck.

I couldnt get Deft to dry on mine, thats where the super glue came in. Im sure every piece has different amounts of oil leaching out. The super glue sounds wierd and a pain, but quite honestly it spreads and covers very easily.
