I just want to thank KerryB for leading me to this wonderful stave on the bottom of a pile across from his tent at OJAM. 3" Natural reflex on the tip of the limp with the huge hole and the opposing end had about 2" of deflex throughout the entire limb. A big thanks to Ralph Renfro for helping lay it out. As I get more pics from a buddy's camera I'll post up the bow cut out.
Had a great time at OJAM and with a son on the way in April I'm working on building up the brownie points to head up to MOJAM.

Looks like a good one to tackle! Love the holy bows!
I was build a yew bow with hole in the upper limb and a nasty knot in the bottom fade. Had her tillered out to 28.5" and was shooting her in today and she blew on me. Second one in week. Kinda got me down but I'll get back up LOL
Stiks
Love the title. Must say I have known to gravitate to the gnarly twisted and distroted staves as well. :knothead: Nice stave and you are very right about Kerry B. He is a great guy and he has blessed me with a few nice staves as well.
I went to OJAM looking for the nastiest ugliest piece of wood availible and I came out even more happy than I expected. Having worked a few cleaner staves, Keenan like you I almost think the nastier more "unique" the better!
Here are the other pics and flipping the deflexed tip to match the natural flip on the other.

Tat is gonna be awsome!
OMG Goose.. Wish ya the best.
nice...this is the second giant hole bow i have seen. Gonna be great once its complete.
that is going to be an awesome bow.
Way to go Goose, going to be a sweet looking bow, can't wait to see the finished shooter.
Very cool bow, Goose. There will be a guy at the Tenn Classic from NY that builds lots of bows with holes in them. "Hole in the Bow" Chuck is his name. Wait till you see his bows!
This is cool. I'mm watching with anticipation of hearing how she shoots.
"Hearts Desire" or "Heart Break"? d;^)
Very cool...if you can, please keep us updated on your progress.
what hole?
Is that what you call a center shot self bow? :bigsmyl:
cool
I saw you working on that bow and thought you were crazy. I wish I knew it was you and I would of said hi. Good luck with it.
Looks like the predecessor to the Hoyt Gamemaster! Cool lookin' bow.
Stuck it up on a tillering tree to give some visuals of the deflex of the holy limb (left side) and reflex that the straight limb had naturally (right side). Bent the reflex in on the left limb. Looking forward to the challenge for sure.

Goose, if you pull this off successfully, you da man! Gonna be interesting watching this build.
Stan
Goose, Slow and steady wins the race!
Looks good! Jawge
I cant wait to see the final product, should be interesting.
Looks like the Holy Grail of bows! Good luck! Rather, I'll be pray'n for ya!
("What hole?" LOL!!)
That's gonna be a challenge Goose, no doubt about that. I wish ya luck brotha!
If it makes it all the way, it will definitely be one of a kind.
it will make it, he had it bending nicely this weekend I have all the confidence in the world.
Spent some time tonight thinning out the limbs and getting them to bend evenly. Thanks for the great tool to get the bow to brace height. I had a few scrap pieces so I whipped one out. I think it's bending much better than it was @ OJAM but I am by no means in a hurry.
Here's a sneak peak.

Looks real good can't wait to see it finished
She's coming along nicely. Goose!
Boy I have been intimidated by all the knots I see in my juniper staves but thats flat out amazing!
love the look of it. Good luck and cant wait to see it at full draw.
Yep, you 'da man, Goose. Looks good to this neophyte.
Stan
Hey i saw you there! Wow! That is really cool!
Did a bit of work today and now you can see @ 4 1/2" brace height the top limb doesn't want to track at the flip. No cracking and croaking so far.

razorsharptokill my ugly mug is kinda hard to forget... so says my wife. Hope you got a nice osage stave before they were all gone on Wednesday. They sure went fast!
Look good Goose, real good.
Holy Cow...that's going to be neat!!!!
Lookin good Goose, it is bending much better than at Ojam. I think that thing may just turn into a bow.
Did Will get his shooting?
You can't build bows in an area like the last picture, you have to have yeller dust and shavings piled high. Maybe thats only my shop.
Did some work on the holy bow today and had a buddy come along as well with his. My buddy and I were able to get his bow to brace height (I know there are some trials ahead with his).
On the holy bow we got it to a 6 1/2" brace height and it looks good. Way funky unstrung profile with all but the flipped tip on the holy limb being natural. I'm liking how it's turning out so far. Critiques welcomed!

ME LIKE!!!! Goose that sure is looking sweet, doing a great joy sir, congrats.
That is looking so cool!
CJ
serious issues. That's pretty great looking!
Goose you got her looking good bud! Inspired me to dig up a stave out of the pile with a big nasty hole :bigsmyl: I love a bow with some nasty holes in it.
You may want to put that dude on a caul and heat some reflex in the holy limb. JMO It will be interesting to see what others think about that.
I love how we can all learn from each others builds here.
Stiks
Stiks the only thing keeping me from heating up that deflex is two sections of pin knots that irk me just enough to keep from doing it. I'm not looking for a screamer but a shootable bow at the moment. I'm sure it will mess with the cast of the arrow quite a bit but my goal is to get it shooting first. I'll take some pictures of those pin knot areas and see what y'all think.
The first picture is the back the second is the belly. There are 3 sections of pin knots. First section of 3 right next to the flipped tip. Second one midlimb. Third is a group of 4 right outside of the hole.

Goose, that is a nice looking bow! As you know, take it slow and it will have a better chance of becoming a good shooter.
Goose I would heat it but that's just me. I may be wrong in thinking that. So take it for what it's worth.
After hearing your thoughts I may just get her shooting first too. Then temper the belly and add the reflex. Several options I suppose.
Main thing is like Walt said take it slow and get her shooting.

So I spent most of the day piddling and got the bow shooting. 46# @ 28" Here are the first 3 shots at 10 yards. Not too bad. I did have to wait for the wife to get home to get pictures of the full draw. So, because it shot an arrow it is a bow. No creaks no groans and I got er there. HOLY MOLY is now a bow that needs just a sanding and a couple more hundred shots through it to be finished!

Very cool bow Goose and lots of talent to work around that hole. Very well done!!!

It's alive! Great job Goose I Love it!

Great full draw pic from the front view, I was hoping you would do that! :notworthy:
No peep sights allowed on the 3-d course pal! Nice job Goose.
Awesome bow, great work and skill pulling that off. Very nice tiller. Congratulations
Yes indeed! You 'da man, Goose! Absolutely beautiful! Great job.

Mike
That is awesome work. Beautiful
Great work Goose, very well done.
Great job on a tough stave!
Holy Moly that turned out nice, great job!! Bring her to Mojam, I would like to see it first hand.
Great Job!!
Wow, great work :)
Man, I give you credit! I don't think I could ever build something like that, let alone work with easy stave!! Great job!
Goose that's absolutely awesome ! It's hard to believe but you did it. GREAT job.

Andy
Agian Wow! That's awsome work.
Goose, What a great job on a tough piece of wood. You've inspired me, I have a piece that is similar to that with a knot in sort of the same location, was going to cut it up for fire wood, but after seeing what you've accomplished with yours, I'll give it a try. The knot in mine is solid though, don't know what problems that will create, but we'll find out.....Dan
I know I've enjoyed this challenge and can't wait to find another like it in the future. Thanks for all the kudos everyone. I'm working on some special touches before getting a finish on it. Hopefully I will be able to finish it out before my son gets here. Due date is April 19th. Any day now!
Dan jump in and get your feet wet for sure. I know the knot I have isn't bending much at all if any if it helps you out. Not sure about a knot that is still attached though :)
I will keep my eye out for a new challenge as we are making some staves for next year. Maybe I will have a real surprise for you at Ojam or Mojam next year.
Congrats to you and your wife
Congrats on the youngun coming Goose. By the way you inspired me to jump into a nasty knot hole with this post. I'll start a thread on it down the road. she's sitting in the corner for now.
Here's a couple of pictures... one from my buddy's bow that he has now shot so we can call it a bow. The second is a sneak peak of the tips that are going on the bow. Maybe this weekend I can get to putting a finish on this bow :)

So I spent some time tonight fixin up the tips, putting a final sanding, and putting on a finish. I'm still wondering if I'm going to put on a handle or leave it as is and shoot off my hand. I'm extremely happy with how the tips turned out and the finish really lets the nastiness of the hole show. Took some better pictures with my wife's camera to really show it off. Thanks for looking.

Goose, that is such a great bow...I love the tips! Congrats on a job well done.
amazing
If not for anything else, it is quite the conversation piece. It looks fantastic. What a looker it became from its' humble beginnings. Good luck with your hole in the wall shooter, congrats again on it and seeing it to fruition.
One of coolest bows ive ever seen :)
Ken
Wow, super nice Goose! Drooling of course..........Art
Great one of a kind bow. Nice finish work as well.
Looks really good Goose. I have a stave at the house that has two knots on either side near the mid-point. This has got me thinking about leaving them in as arrow rests.
Man Goose talk about guts. But, no guts no glory. So now you got some glory too. Very impressive work brother. Hope I can come through as nicely! That bow is so sweet.
Ah that is just so cool. Great job.
Great job, goose! Way cool!
Stan
Thanks for the props. Was a fun project and flings and arrow pretty well!
