Title: Bows in progress
Post by: Legionnaire on March 05, 2011, 04:25:00 PM
Here's some bows in progress. they need finishing work and leather handles. the two bows are already tillere. one is a california Flatbow osage rawhide backed, draws 27 inches and is 54 1/4 inches long, and it feels like it draws 50lbs with a 5 1/2 inch brace height.
The other one is a sinew back plains double curve osage bow. 44 inches long and draws 22 inches @ 60-65 lbs still have to measure that one. The nock is of abother osage bow Im workin on, just applied horn overlays. still have to tiller it to 55 @ 28 inches. its about 59 inches long recurved. the arrows are just 2 primitive arrows turkey fletching 29 1/2 inches long with blunt tips. 5/16 thickness, I made these from scratch. they both shoot very well and fly in the same direction even though they are not spined.
first pic is of a horn bow im working on. just cut the horns by hand the other day  :D

I love those arrows! Very cool. They look lke the arrows that were featured in PA mag last issue. I believe a Northern Cal. tribe had used them? Nice work

Hey PD I dont get PA mag so I wouldnt know but I thought theyd look nice with feathers like this. I got the idea of someone else from another board. The blunt I dea I got it from a picture of some mohave indians from Ca so I just did it like them and added the nice feathers.

Hupa Tribe is the name. I keep fighting this primitive thing............but its winning......I figure wood arrows and all wood lam'ed bows are enough. But the desire to go a step farther with the primitive bow building keeps nipping away at me. DANGIT! Another hobby.
